Forty years ago my grandfather went on vacation to Sicily and
visited the salt pans of Trapani, a place near the sea where many people worked hard to produce the salt we all use. Next to this place there was a stall where he bought a souvenir. It was a small windmill. In reality the mill was used to produce salt. In fact, the windmill was used to pass water from the sea to the salt flats and to grind the salt. The movement that the mill makes to grind the salt is transmitted by a large wooden gear with 36 teeth, which makes a smaller one with 18 teeth move. The souvenir cost about 50 euros, is made entirely of stone, the blades for the wind are made of wood and is 30 cm high. It's a near perfect reproduction, that's why I love it.
