Curriculum can be defined as a sum of social, contextual, political and philosophical perspectives
which are used to design an educational or language learning program. While a course can be
differentiated from Curriculum that a course specifically leads to a goal related to the language learning
and knowledge of language.

Syllabus is a statement about what should be arranged in order to achieve the goal of language
learning. Syllabus is a part of course designs while syllabus and course design form a complete
curriculum. Throughout the time, different approaches have been used to design a course. GTA, DA,
ALA, and Communicative Approach are familiar approaches which have been used in different contexts
at different times. Description of teacher's beliefs about social, contextual and academic use of language
determines that how a teacher thinks about different approaches and how he will use them?

A context is a sole source of designing a course. Briefly, a context contains people's settings,
social, institutional and temporal backgrounds of the individuals enrolled in a course. At a grand level
aims provide us general goals of the curriculum. Aims can be reasons, guidelines, and other general
perspectives related with the curriculum. In relation to the aims, Objectives are more specific because
they contain time-oriented and knowledge based behavior towards use of specific curriculum. Need
Analysis is most important part of course designing because it involves the complete information about
purpose, duration, needs, participants, Communicative level and proficiency levels.

After having a complete background of above mentioned aspects, it's decided that how to
formulate a syllabus according to chronological order in order to achieve aims and objectives. Syllabuses
can be Situational, functional and task or activity based etc. Afterwards format of the course, its shapes,
organization of the course, language testing and materials are decided.

All these steps are processed through an evaluation process in which do's and do nots are decided. A
thorough justification of each step is done in this process and after that a Syllabus is designed to enable
a course to achieve a specific goal.
