Solve the LP Problem as indicated.

Due to the quality of the sun and the region’s excellent climate, a winemaking company
can produce two varieties of grapes – Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. The company must
manage its $9500 capital since each hectare of Sauvignon Blanc would cost $100, while
Chardonnay would cost $200 per hectare. The company only has available 1100 man-days.
Sauvignon Blanc requires 10 man-days per hectare and 30 man-days per hectare for
Chardonnay. How much hectare must the company plant for each variety of grapes to maximize
its profit from $50 per hectare of Sauvignon Blanc and $120 per hectare of Chardonnay?

I. GRAPHICAL METHOD

Let: x = # of hectares of Sauvignon Blanc Objective Function: z = 50x +120y

y = # of hectares of Chardonnay Subject to: 100x + 200y ≤ 9500
10x + 30y ≤ 1100

Let x = 0 Let y = 0
100x + 200y = 9500 100x + 200y = 9500
200 y 9500 100 x 9500
100(0) + = + 200(0) =
200 200 100 100
y = 47.56 x = 95

(0, 47.56) (95,0)

Let x = 0 Let y = 0

10x + 30y = 1100 10x + 30y = 1100

30 y 1100 10 x 1100
10(0) + = + 30(0) =
30 30 10 10
y = 36.66667 x = 110

(0, 36.67) (110,0)

Eliminate x: Substitute y = 15
100x + 200y ≤ 9500 10x + 30y = 1100
10x + 30y ≤ 1100 10x + 30(15) = 1100

10x + 450 - 450 = 1100 – 450

100x + 200y = 9500
10 x 650
10x + 30y = 1100 =
10 x 10
-10(10x + 30y =1100) x = 65

100x + 200y = 9500

-100x – 300y = -11000
−100 y −1500
=
−100 −100
y = 15

(0, 47.56) Feasible Points:

(0, 36.67) = $ 4400.40

(0, 36.67)
(0,0) = $ 0

(95,0) = $ 4750

(65, 15) (65, 15) = $ 5050

(0, 0) (95, 0) (110, 0)

At (0, 0): At (0, 36.67): At (95, 0): At (65,15):

z = 50x + 120y z = 50x + 120y z = 50x + 120y z = 50x + 120y

z = 50(0) + 120(0) z = 50(0) + 120(36.67) z = 50(95) + 120(0) z = 50(65) + 120(15)

z=0 z = 4400.40 z = 4750 z = 3250 + 1800

z = 5050

h
Therefore, the winemaking must produce 65 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc and 15 hectares
of Chardonnay to maximize its profit.
II. SIMPLEX METHOD

Let: x = hectares of Sauvignon Blanc Objective Function:

y = hectares of Chardonnay
Maximize z = 5x +
120y
100x + 200y ≤ 9500
Maximize
10x + 30y ≤z –1100
50x – 120y + 0s₁ + 0s₂ = 0
100 x’ – 10x” + 2y + S₁ = 0
10x’ – 10x” + 30y + S₂ = 1100

Basic z x y S₁ S₂ Solution
z 1 -50 -120 0 0 0
S₁ 0 100 200 1 0 9500
S₂ 0 10 30 0 1 1100

Basic z x y S₁ S₂ Solution
z 1 -10 0 0 4 4400
S₁ 0 -33.33333 0 1 -6.66667 2166.66667
y 0 0.33333 1 0 0.03333 36.66667

Basic z x y S₁ S₂ Solution
z 1 0 0 3.33 2 5050
x 0 1 0 0.03 -6.67 65
y 0 0 1 -0.01 0.1 15

Therefore, the winemaking company must produce 65 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc and 15
hectares of Chardonnay to maximize its profit.
