All the tropical rainforests are near the Equator. Most of them are in the Tropics.

The biggest tropical rainforest

is the Amazon rainforest in South America. The second biggest is the Congo rainforest in Africa. There are smaller
rainforests in Central America, Madagascar, India and Australia.
Tropical rainforests cover only about 6 percent (%) of Earth, but they have 50% of all the different types of
animals and plants that we know. About 10 square kilometers of rainforest can have 750 types of tree, 1,500 types
of plants, 400 types of birds, and 150 types of butterflies. However, today, the world's rainforests are in danger.
More than half have been destroyed. As the destruction continues, scientists fear the world's remaining 2.5
billion acres may soon disappear. The culprit? Humans.
Many of the medicines now used to treat illnesses and diseases come from plants that grow in the rainforest.
Entire forests have been cut down and converted into pastures for cattle ranching. Mineral-rich forests have also
been demolished for mining.
Rainforests are beautiful and important places. Save the rainforests!
