Ozone Layer Depletion

The ozone layer protects all living organisms from excess and effects of ultraviolet radiation,
including skin cancer and cataracts in humans and damaging effects on ecosystems. On the other
hand, ozone can also be destroyed because of some damaging reactions from the compounds
emitted from human activities that contain nitrogen, hydrogen, and chlorine. Too much
concentration of these heat trapping gases on the earth’s atmosphere can trigger the ozone and
eventually, it will lead to ozone depletion. If the depletion of the ozone continues to happen, the
production of the harmful UV radiation in earth’s surface will dramatically rise. This will put the
human’s health, agricultural productivity, and the ecosystem at risk.

OZONE LAYER DEPLETION

Some of the research questions for these fields are:

Why does ozone depletion happen? What are the consequences of ozone depletion? Is there a
way to cure the ozone?
What are the most carbon dioxide and halogen emission contributor countries? How can
industrial activities affect the ozone and how can people restrict the amount of emission despite
accelerating urbanization?
What are the chemicals that cause ozone depletion? Are there controls on the production of
ozone damaging substances? Can humans use some substitutes for these chemicals that are less
ozone-depleting than the original?
