I. To illustrate the importance of transportation in our national life, identify a

transportation related article that appears in a local or national newspaper.

Discuss the issue involved and explain why the item was newsworthy.

News article: https://business.inquirer.net/254682/understanding-build-build-

build-program

The news article from Inquirer Philippines entitled “Understanding the ‘Build, Build

, Build’ program” aims to show how this program can probably be the key if done

ideally to improve the inadequate state of transportation in our country and

eventually reducing poverty, stimulate economic growth, and reduce traffic

congestion as these things are directly related to the productivity and efficiency of

time. The article also said that infrastructures are our weak point as a country and

targeting to improve our weak point is a great idea especially in the transportation

sector in which the projects entails that major railways , freeports , airports,

industrial parks, energy facilities, water resource and irrigation systems, flood

control facilities, and redevelopment programs will be planned, built, and

improved . This is really a newsworthy item since it could really be a great help to

our daily lives especially in the area of Metro Manila where hectic transportation is

present every day and if there are numerous projects to be done under this there

will be more job opportunities that will be opened.

II. Estimate the proportion of your monthly budget that is spent on transportation.

Mode of Transportation Monthly Budget

Train ( LRT 1 ) 18 Php x 2 trip per day x 24 days a

month = 864 Php

Jeepney 8 Php x 3 trips per day x 24 days a

month = 576 Php

Tricycle 10 Php x 1 trip per day x 24 days a

month = 240 Php

Total 1680 Php per month

III. Cite at least three department/agency that demonstrate the importance of

transportation in the Philippines.

THE LAND TRANSPORTATION OFFICE (LTO) - This government agency is tasked

in the collection of various fees like the registration of road vehicles, the issuance
of license, collection of fines and penalties due to violations, and the issuance of
license plates of registered vehicles. The agency also promotes the safety, control,
and comfort of all pedestrians and road-users. They demonstrate the importance
of transportation in the Philippines in a way that they monitor and keep track of
the order of the legality of the licenses.

THE LAND TRANSPORTATION FRANCHISING AND REGULATORY BOARD (LTFRB) –

the government agencies’ first goal was to simplify the land transportation
industry franchise system in the Philippines. Today, higher safety standard for
land travel is being observed as well as the commercial and private vehicles. They
demonstrate in the implementing and regulating of laws and rules affecting road-
users in the Philippines

DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION (DOTr) – The government departments’ aims

to provide the country with efficient, effective, and secure transportation systems
that are globally competitive, compliant with international standards, and
responsive to the changing times. They demonstrate the importance of
transportation in our country through infrastructure projects that can help ease
the state of transportation in the Philippines and improve the quality of life of
Filipinos

IV. Cite the importance of transportation in:

a.) Economics – Good transportation system is a huge boost for the economy it
not just only increases the overall accessibility of goods and services it also
reduces the transportation costs namely the travel time, vehicle operation cost,
road and parking facility costs and increase the productivity and development of
all.

b.) Politics – Transportations’ importance in economics are quite slim but in

summary having a good transportation system results from good governance and
good projects and planning from the politics sector.

c.) Environment - Transportation has a huge impact in environment as it one of

the main user of energy, produces pollution ( both air and noise pollution) which
contributes greatly in global warming through the emission of carbon dioxide but
in the past few years they are exploring better alternatives under green
transportation which does not affect the environment negatively

d.) Education – As a student myself a good transportation system can really help
the productivity in studying instead of wasting time stucked in traffic and not
getting enough rest since in the state of the transportation system in the
Philippines you’ll be spending a hefty amount of your day waiting for a train or
vehicles to ride.

V. The following socioeconomic data have been collected:

Population 72,173
Area 70 square miles
Registered vehicles 26,685
Single-family housing units 15,675
Apartment units 7567
Retail employment 5502
Nonretail employment 27,324
Student attendance 28,551 by zone of attendance
Average household income $17,500
Total traffic zones 129

The results of the cross-classification analysis are as follows.

Total trips produced for study area 282,150 trips/day
Home-to-work trips 13% (36,680)
Home-to-nonwork trips 62% (174,933)
Non-home trips 25% (70,537)

The attraction rates for the study area have been developed using the following
assumptions.
100% of home-to-work trips go to employment locations.
Home-to-nonwork trips are divided into the following types.
Visit friends 10%
Shopping 60%
School 10%
Nonretail employment 20%
Non-home trips are divided into the following types.
Other employment area (nonretail) 60%
Shopping 40%
Determine the number of home-to-work, home-to-nonwork, and non-home-based
trips attracted to a zone with the following characteristics.
Population 1920
Dwelling units 800
Retail employment 50
Nonretail employment 820
School attendance 0

SOLUTION:

HOME TO WORK

Home to work trips attracted to zone =

home to work trips in study area x [total employee in zone ÷ total employee in
study area]

Total employee in zone = retail employment + non retail employment

=50+820
=870

Total employees in study area = retail employment + non retail employment

=5502+27624
=32826

Home to work trip attracted to zone = 36680 x [870 ÷ 32826]

=972 trips
HOME TO NON-WORK

Visiting friends = 0.10 x total home to non-work trips x [total dwelling units in
zone ÷ total dwelling units in study area]

Total dwelling units in study area = single family housing units + apartment units
=15675+7567
=23242

Visiting friends 0.10 x 174933 x [800 ÷ 23242]

= 602 trips

Shopping = 0.6 x total non-work trips x [ total retail employee in zone ÷ total
retail employee in study area ]
=0.1 x 174933 x [0÷28511]
= 0 trips

Nonretail employment = 0.2 x total home to nonwork trips x[nonretail employee

in zone ÷ nonretail employee in study area]
=0.2 x 174933 x [820 ÷ 27324]
= 1050 trips

Total number of home to work trips in zone = visiting friends + shopping +

school + nonretail employment
=602+954+0+1050
= 2606 trips

NON HOME BASED TRIPS

Nonretail employment = 0.6 x total non home based trips x [non retail employee
in zone ÷ non retail employee in study area]
= 0.6 x 70357 x [820÷27624]
= 1270 trips

Shopping = 0.4 x total non home based trips x [total retail employee in zone ÷
total retail employee in study area]
=0.4 x 70537 x [50÷5502]
=256 trips

Total number of non home based trips in zone = shopping + non retail
employement
=256+1270
=1526 trips
