SCENE 1
they did not close the sky above us… they did
not give us this world, nor life
Isaac, Ibrahim, Said
House within reach of the wilderness.
Game of light through window and fissures.
Isaac prepares things.
Ibrahim enters…
IBRAHIM- Isaac, whither?
ISAAC- To the palace.
IBRAHIM- (observes him, and then
confidentially): You must be mysterious in
three things: whither you go; what you think…
and about the gold you have. Keep these
three silent at the court.
ISAAC- I have no gold!
IBRAHIM- These three things that I have listed
have many enemies. They lie in ambush, and
whenever they snatch the opportunity, they
size their plunder.
ISAAC- I shall keep this in mind, Father.
IBRAHIM- Always keep in mind your thought,
and do not utter it anybody. Think it yourself,
and remembers it in yourself!
ISAAC- What is the use of a thought that is
thought by itself in silence?

İBRAHİM- Nereye İshak?
İSHAK- Saraya.
İBRAHİM- (onu önce gözetler ve sonra gizemli
bir edayla [fısıldayarak?]): Üç şey hakkında

ISAAC- Why this pretence, father? I work in the
palace of young emperor. And he guarantees,
personally, that everyone is equal. And Arab does
not have an advantage over a non-Arab, nor does a
Jew have one over a non-Jew. Everyone is what he
is, he can keep possession of his faith, and there is
no difference between anybody or anything,
except in knowledge.
IBRAHIM – My son, perhaps the young Emperor
does think so, however there are certainly also
those who do not think so.
ISAAC- If the Emperor think so, then others
should think the same?
IBRAHIM – Courts are always the same, however
emperors change. Only obedient can you enter this
courts, and if you don’t enter so, you will become
so with time.
ISAAC- Father… “they did not close the sky
above us… they did not give us this world, nor life!”
I have remembered you told me when I set out the
first time for the palace.
IBRAHIM – Do you remember who your mother is?
ISAAC - Naturally.
IBRAHIM - And your father?
ISAAC - (laughs) : Father…
IBRAHIM - From two different peoples… two
different faiths.
ISAAC - I know everything, Father.
IBRAHIM - If you knew, you would feel pain. And
sometimes it pains so…
Ibrahim covers his face with his hands and sighs
painfully…
ISAAC - Father…
IBRAHIM- (takes his hands away from his face,
looks at Isaac with a different, clouded gaze) : And
who are you?

Ketman/Kitman means concealment/sır tutma.
İBRAHİM- [Peki,] Ölümün yararı [/amacı] nedir?
İSHAK- Ölümden söz açan kim baba?
İBRAHİM-(yumuşak ve mistik bir edayla) Kitman!
İSHAK- Neden bu numaları yapıyorsun baba? Ben
genç hükümdarın sarayında çalışıyorum. O bizzat
herkesin birbiriyle eşit olduğuna inanıyor. [ya da bunu
tahhüt ediyor] Arabın Arap olmayana bir üstünlüğü
olmadığı gibi, Musevinin de Musevi olmayana bir
üstinlüğü yoktur. Herkes neyse odur ve yine herkes
inancını koruyabilir. Hiç kimse ya da hiç bir şey
arasında bilgi dışında hiçbir fark/üstünlük yoktur.
İBRAHİM- Evladım, belki genç hükümdar [gerçekten
de] böyle düşünüyordur, ancak [bil ki kesin olarak]
böyle düşünmeyenler de var.
İSHAK- Şayet hükümdarın düşüncesi buysa, ötekilerin
de [onunla] aynı şekilde düşünmeleri gerekmez mi?
İBRAHİM- Hükümdarlar değisse de saraylar hep
aynıdır. Ancak itaatkâr isen bu saraylara girebilirsin
yok değilsen bile zamanla itaatkâr olmaya
başlayacaksın.
İSHAK- Baba, sarayda işe ilk başladığımda bana: “onlar
üzerimizdeki gökyüzünü kapatmadılar(hükümdarlar
göğü tavan kılmadılar?)... onlar bize; ne bu dünyayı
bahşettiler ne de yaşamı” dediğini anımsıyorum.
İBRAHİM- Annenin de kim olduğunu hatırlıyor
musun?
İSHAK- Elbette.
İBRAHİM- ya babanın?
İSHAK- (gülümser): Baba…
İBRAHİM- İki farklı inançtan, iki farklı insan…
İSHAK- Baba, biliyorum her şeyi.
İBRAHİM- Eğer biliyorsan, acı çekiyor olmalısın. Ve
kimi zaman bu acı çok…
İbrahim elleriyle yüzünü kapatır ve acı içinde iç çeker...
İSHAK- Baba…
İBRAHİM- (Ellerini yüzünden çeker, İshak’a gözü
yaşlı[/karanlık] ve (öncekinden)farklı bir bakış atarak
(sorar)): ve Sen kimsin?
ISAAC – (embraces him) : I am yours, Father.
IBRAHIM – I do not remember…
ISAAC – You are tired father.
IBRAHIM – (pricks up his ears) : Do you hear the
call of the wilderness?
ISAAC – These wanderings of yours in the
wilderness can be dangerous.
IBRAHIM – My son, it is written in my stars that I
am not destined to be afraid.
Said enters
SAID - There is a storm in the distance, it seems.
IBRAHIM – Said… my son, you have come back to
me from a distant journey.
SAID - The light is different here than there,
Father.
IBRAHIM – (confidentially) : Said, when you journey
once more through these foreign lands, remember:
why expose oneself to the dangers of those whose
reason the God has taken.
SAID - I remembered, Father. And I applied your
“ketman” several times. The last time I sojourned
in foreign parts, I introduced myself as John.
IBRAHIM – And how did they receive you?
SAID – They received me as one of their own,
Father. And they rendered me such honours…
IBRAHIM – Did you hear?
And then he hastily calms and pricks up his ears….
Now it could appear... his sprit… in the desert…
Ibrahim departs…
Said and Isaac follow him with their gazes…
ISAAC – (softly) : He is not what he once was.
SAID-He was a tree of knowledge in the body of a
scholar.
İSHAK- (Babasına sarılır): Ben sana ait olanım, baba.
İBRAHİM – Hatırlamıyorum…
İSHAK- Yorgunsun baba.
İBRAHİM – (Kulak kabartır): Çölün(/Yabanın)
çağırdığını duyuyor musun?
İSHAK- Böyle çölde/yabanda? başı boş dolanmaların
tehlikeli olabilir.
İBRAHİM – Oğlum, korkunun kaderim olmadğı
yıldızlarımda yazılmış bulunmakta.
Sait içeri girer
SAİT – Görünen o ki, uzaklarda fırtına var.
İBRAHİM – Sait, evladım, çok uzak bir seferden
bana döndün.
SAİT – Buradaki ışık, oradinden farklı baba.
İBRAHİM – (gizlice): Sait, bu yabancı topraklarda bir
kez daha yolculuk ederken hatırla: Sait, bu yabancı
topraklarda bir kez daha yolculuk ederken şunu
hatırla: Allahın zaten bildiği seyler için kendini
neden tehlikelere maruz bırakasın?[?]
SAİT – Unutmadım baba. Senin şu “Ketmanı” birkaç
kez tatbik ettim. Yabancı yerlerdeki son geçici
ikametimde kendimi “John” olarak tanıttım.
İBRAHİM – Peki, seni karşılamaları nasıldı?
SAİT – Bena kendilerinden biriymişim gibi
yaklaştılar baba. Ve beni böylece onurlandırdılar.
İBRAHİM – İşittin mi?
Nihayet bir anda yatışır ve kulak kabartır…. İşte
şimdi tezahür edecektir ... onun ruhu ... çölde
...İbrahim oradan ayrılır…
Sait ve İshak bakışlarıyla onu takip ederler ...
İSHAK- (yumuşak bir edayla): O, bir zamanlar ki o
değil.
SAİT - O, bilge bedeninde[/bilge bedenine
bürünmüş] bir bilgi ağacıydı.
ISAAC - And now he is not of healthy sprit.
SAID - He often steps in to another light, however
his body remains in this one here.
ISAAC - Are you obsessed with light?
SAID - Light is enigma of everything.
Isaac begins to leave…
SAID - Whither?
ISAAC - To the palace, brother.
SAID - Isaac, could you perhaps utter a word or
two about me in the palace?
ISAAC - You must do this yourself… John…
Isaac departs… Said watches after him…
Desert storm in the distance…
Grows dark… Music…
İSHAK- Ama şimdiyse sağlıklı bir ruha sahip değil.
SAİT- Bedeni burada kalıyor olsa da o, sık sık
başka bir ışığa geçiyor.
İSHAK- Işıkla mı bozdun sen?
SAİT- Işık her şeyin gizemidir.
İshak ayrılmaya başlar…
SAİT- Nereye?
İSHAK- Saraya, kardeşim.
SAİT- İshak, [hani] bir ihtimal, sarayda benden
birkaç söz de olsa bahsedebilir misin?
İSHAK- Bunu kendin yapmalısın... John…
İshak oradan ayrılır.. Sait ardından seyreder…
Uzakta bir çöl fırtınası…
[Sahne] kararır… Müzik..
