1: Introduction to Normal Distributions and the Stan-

dard Normal Distribution
Properties of a Normal Distribution

• Continuous random variable has an infinite number of possible values that can be represented
by an interval on a number line. Its probability distribution is call a continuous probability
distribution

• A normal distribution is a continuous probability distribution for a random variable x. The

graph of a normal distribution is called the normal curve. A normal distribution has these
properties:

i. The mean, median, and mode are equal

ii. The normal curve is bell-shaped and is symmetric about the mean
iii. The total area under the normal curve is equal to 1
iv. The normal curve approaches, but never touches, the x-axis as it extends farther and
farther away from the mean
v. Between µ - and µ + , the graph curves downward. The graph curves upward to the
left of µ - and to the right of µ + .

• Normal curve:

• Example 1: 1. Which normal curve has a greater mean?

2. Which normal curve has a greater stan-
dard deviation?

17
• Example 2: The normal curve shown on the
right represents a scaled test scores. What is
the mean test score? Estimate the standard
deviation

The Standard Normal Distribution

• The standard normal distribution is a normal distribution with a mean of 0 and a standard
deviation of 1. The total area under its normal curve is 1

• Properties of the standard normal distribution:

i. The cumulative area is close to 0 for z-scores close to z = -3.49

ii. The cumulative area increases as the z-scores increase
iii. The cumulative area for z = 0 is 0.5
iv. The cumulative area is close to 1 for z-scores close to z = 3.49

• Example 3: Find the cumulative area that corresponds to a z-score of 1.15

Finding Areas Under the Standard Normal Curve

i. Sketch the standard normal curve and shade the appropriate are under the curve

ii. Find the area by following the directions for each case as follow:

a. To find the area to the left of z, find the area that corresponds to z in the Standard Normal
Table
b. To find the area to the right of z, find the area that corresponds to z, then subtract the area
from 1
c. To find the area between tow z-scores, find the area corresponding to each z-score, then
subtract the smaller area from the larger area

• Example 4:

1. Find the area under the standard normal curve to the left of z = -0.99
2. Find the area under the standard normal curve to the right of z = 1.06
3. Find the area under the standard normal curve between z = -1.5 and z = 1.25
