Advertising is a fast growing industry. Is this a positive or negative development?

In modern society, it is very common for companies to present and popularize their products through
advertisements. Some people believe that advertising encourages us to buy things we really do not need. While
others say that advertisements tell us about new products that may improve our lives. As far as I am concerned I
support the idea that expansion of advertising industry has more benefits than drawbacks for a number of
reasons.

To begin with, commercial expansion helps consumers to educate and familiarize with new products. For
example, if customer wants to find out about new products, their features, prices and uses, he can find that
information in short advertisement. As a result, it also convinces people to adopt new ways of life, giving up
their old habits and have a better standard of living.

Moreover, growing advertising industry creates more employment opportunities. For instance, people
who chose artist path often have hard time to find customers and get commissions. In the meantime,
advertisement companies provide job offers for many talented people like painters, photographers, singers,
cartoonists, musicians and models. This way, people not only have consistent income but also get
encouragement to follow their dreams.

On the other hand, it is believed that advertising growth prompts people to spend money on unnecessary
products. People claim that catchy commercials promote materialism and create a desire and taste for the new
products which are not actually necessities of life.

Taking everything into account, despite the fact that growing advertising industry encourages money
waste on inessential devices, I am inclined to believed that commercials improve customer knowledge and help
to seek for employment opportunities.
