Deep learning, big data, cloud computing, fintech and IoT
Creating the future in anticipation of IT innovation
Solutions to all problems are derived from data collection and data analysis.
Efficient data processing skills and the ability to understand data content are
essential competencies for promising working adults.

Artificial intelligence (AI) based on deep learning and expert

systems has gone as far as defeating human champions in
chess, quizzes and go, and even to give diagnoses of diseases.
Commercialization of a self-driving car embodying advanced
information processing technology is drawing near. Fine-tuned
information services leveraging big data have been creating
new value. These IT innovations are supported by technology
for analyzing and understanding huge amounts and varieties
of data, and technology for efficiently processing the data.
The recent spread of the Internet and Internet of things (IoT)
is bringing about an increased variety and volume of data
beyond the boundaries of existing undergraduate-level educa-
tion. Although high-dimensional, data-informed problem-solv-
ing competence has potential for cross-area utility, universities
have traditionally provided subject-specific education such as
science and engineering, health, economics and educational
studies. On the other hand, existing information science
departments have conventionally focused on data processing
technology education, not on understanding data content.
Against this backdrop, the School of Informatics and Data
Science offers structured and integrated learning courses to
help students acquire the abilities to understand data content,
improve data-informed problem-solving competence and learn
the technologies for efficiently processing large amounts of
data, with the aim of nurturing human resources capable of
developing the future by leveraging data.

The aim of the School of Informatics and Data Science is to cultivate human resources who have acquired an
internationally applicable basic knowledge of and practical skills in data science and informatics, which are
fundamental to information science, and can contribute to the further development of today s rapidly
globalizing, advanced information-oriented society by taking a data-informed problem-solving approach
Guiding principles of Hiroshima University based on the processing/analysis of huge amounts and varieties of data, including big data and high-dimen-
sional data. The School particularly welcomes students who:

Create the future in anticipation of IT innovation

by studying at the School of Informatics and
Data Science, Hiroshima University.
Currently, we can access a huge amount of information through the Internet. However, the informa-
tion itself has no value. What is important is to analyze the accumulated information and use it to lead
to knowledge. In modern society, there is demand in many fields for human resources who can ana-
lyze gathered information and make rational judgments based on objective data.
Information science is an academic field that deals with this process. Data science and informatics are
closely connected; neither of them can be absent in the pursuit of information science. In light of this,
the School of Informatics and Data Science provides organic learning opportunities in the Data
Science Course and Informatics Course, aiming to nurture human resources capable of developing
the future by leveraging data.
Informatics and data science have enormous potential and diverse application areas. Through
research and education in this attractive field, the School of Informatics and Data Science strives to
make a contribution to our society from an informational aspect. My hope is that many motivated
young people are able to get together to learn and make the School vibrant with life.

The brain is a wonderful information-processing device that we have

acquired through evolution. Since a method that mimics the information
processing of the brain's visual system proved effective in image recogni-
tion, an improved version of this method has been applied to various
tasks. It is said that it has already reached the same level of performance
as humans in the area of face recognition tasks, etc. However, even with
this approach, there are many problems that can be easily solved by

AI is changing financial data analysis.

I have been researching the analysis and
modeling of large-scale complex data.

As humankind has been generating an unprecedentedly huge amount of

data in recent years, it has become an urgent task to effectively analyze
this data and reflect the analysis results in decision making. Most of the
actual data sets are huge and complex. Although such data are too

Machine learning, including deep learning, and statistical analyses such
