Koko's Ingenious Navigation
Kiera was happy to make it to the
Aretic tundra just before midnight to
visit her friend Koko. After greeting
Koko’s family and exchanging gifts
in thelr igloo, the two girls planned
their morning excursion on Koko's
snowmobile.
Barly the next day, they drank warm
tea, packed some snacks, and set
ut for their excursion. They were
having so much fun taking turns
driving the snowmobile that they
failed to notice the landscape around them. It looked as if there was nothing but plain white
snow for miles on end! A thick fog had enveloped them and obscured their vision. Kiera was
scared and realized that she had no idea where she was, She screamed at, Koko to turn back but
her friend continued driving.
Aflera while, Koko stopped at a big mound of snow and exclaimed, “I know where we are!” She
then turned at a right angle and drove for ten minutes before parking in front of her welcoming
igloo,
Later, Koko confessed that although she was alittle bit afraid, she knew that she would encounter
a familiar landmark sooner or later, ‘This confidence stemmed from her childhood training with
her grandpa who taught her to always be vigilant and form a close relationship with the land
around her. She drew lines in the snow to explain how she viewed the topography of the area —
dotted with small and familiar landmarks which are joined together by invisible lines like the grid
‘on graph paper.
“It is kind of like joining the stars in the night sky using straight lines to know where you are,”
she explained,
Kiera, on the other hand, had grown up in an urban city and had never thought of her
neighbourhood this way before. She was enjaying learning about the importance of understanding
one’s environment from her friend. Koko's instincts had saved them from a dangerous situation,
Her navigational strategies worked well in the snow.
Later, Koko said, “The land around us is like a white blanket, yet is anything but plain, Linear
ridges of snow are formed by winds during the Arctic winter. These “sastrugi” are almost like
parallel ines running alongside each other and I can gauge my location and reach my destination
by driving my snowmobile along these lines.”
