P1. Plane Frame system with 16 identical members, each having length = 3 m ; 𝐸𝐼 =
2 × 104 N. mm2 ; 𝐸𝐴 = 2.19122 × 1010 N ; and 𝑃 = 100 kN. Analyse (i) the whole
system and (ii) the reduced system (using symmetry and/or antisymmetric), to
determine the slope and deflection at a point where the load is applied.

P2. Determine the joint/nodal displacements and member forces for the frame with an
internal hinge in the top beam as shown in the Figure.
P3. Determine the nodal displacements and reactions for the truss. 𝐸 = 210 GPa for all
members ; 𝐿 = 1 m ; 𝐴1 = 𝐴2 = 6 × 10−4 m2 ; 𝐴3 = 6√2 × 10−4 m2 ; 𝑃 = 103 kN

P4. Analyse the 3D truss. Dimensions in figure are in mm; area of cross-section of each
bar: 3225.8 mm2 ; 𝐸 = 69 GPa ; Load applied: Vertical load of 10000 N at Node 1

Coordinates of the nodes:

P5. Determine the first six natural frequency and mode shapes of the three-dimensional
portal frame. Plot the mode shapes.

Properties of vertical beams:

A = 5.14 x 10−3 m2 Jx = 1.73 x 10−7 m4

Iy = 6.90 x 10−6 m4 Iz = 8.49 x 10−5 m4

Properties of horizontal beams:

A = 5.68 x 10−3 m2 Jx = 1.76 x 10−7 m4

Iy = 1.20 x 10−4 m4 Iz = 7.30 x 10−6 m4

The material is steel:

E = 2.1 x 1011 N/m2 𝜈 = 0.3 𝜌 = 7.8 x 103 kg/m3
