r e a c h e d in a n o t h e r 85 days. A f t e r tha t th e r e was,
o n c e again, a l o n g hold-up, b e c a u s e of a l a b o u r
dispute, a n d the b a s e r a f t could be c a s t o n l y
a f t e r a l a p s e of f u r t h e r 685 days. A d m i t t e d l y
this w a s an e x t r e m e c a s e of de l a y in s uch c o n ­
st r u c t i o n bu t the e f f e c t of a g e i n g on g r o u n d
s e t t l e m e n t can be c l e a r l y seen. Out of a total
s e t t l e m e n t o f 172 m m n o less t han 9 3 m m h a d o c c ­
u r r e d d u r i n g s t o p p a g e s of excavation. S i m i l a r
d a t a h a v e been c o l l e c t e d fro m the s e c t i o n where
the e x c a v a t i o n wa s k e p t o p e n for l o n g p e r i o d s of
time. Fig. 4 shows a p l o t of the t i m e vs. ratio
o f th e final s e t t l e m e n t at a c u t level to the
s e t t l e m e n t t h a t o c c u r r e d i m m e d i a t e l y a f t e r the
e x c a v a t i o n d e p t h w as r e a c h e d in d i f f e r e n t test
s ec t i o n s . It is c l e a r t h a t the ratio (St/ S 0 )

T h e e f f e c t of t i m e on g r o u n d s e t t l e m e n t m a y al s o
b e e x a m i n e d fro m its e f f e c t o n the rate of e x c a ­
v a t i o n . For the C a l c u t t a m e t r o the ex c a v a t i o n
r ate for an a v e r a g e 14 m d e e p c u t h a s been 16 to
34 day s p e r m e tre. T h i s rate i n c l u d e s the time
t a k e n to do the a c t u a l excavation, f i xing of
s t ruts a n d all s t o p pages. T h e m a x i m u m g r o u n d
s e t t l e m e n t as e x p r e s s e d b y its ra t i o to the depth
o f c u t has been p l o t t e d a g a i n s t the rate of e x c a ­
vation, Fig. 5. T h e d a t a a r e w i d e l y scattered,
b u t the t r e n d of i n c r e a s i n g s e t t l e m e n t wit h slow
ra t e o f e x c a v a t i o n is c l e a r l y seen.
