CASE STUDY

A commercial Bank is an intermediate party between the borrower and lender of money. It borrows
from one party and lends to another.
Three main functions of commercial bank are:
1) Basic Function. 2) Agency Services to customer. 3) Utility Services.

The basic function is borrowing money from Depositors, and lending it to the Borrowers. The
depositors are usually the low or middle income class peoples, whereas the Borrowers are
businessmen, traders, agriculturists, industrialist and exporters.

A depositor comes to the bank, fills in a form, signs a signature card and hands over some
token money to open an account. After checking the necessary requirements, the Manager opens
his account and issues him a cheque book. The account could be a current Account carrying no
interest, a saving Account having some interest an bearing some restriction on drawing the large
amount, or a fixed deposit account which carries the highest interest rate proportional to the period
of investment. These accounts could be operated by a single or more persons and accordingly
called as Individual and Joint accounts.

Later on, the Depositor himself or anybody on his behalf can deposit any amount to the
account by filling in a deposit slip and handing over the money to the cashier.

For withdrawal, the Depositor or his agent forward a cheque to the to the cashier who gets
it signed(on the back of the cheque) by the forwarder. The cashier certifies the Account holder’s
signature by referring to the respective Signature Card, if the signature don’t match, the cheque is
returned mentioning ‘invalid signature’, otherwise he initiate it and passes it to the other nearby
sitting officer. In case of in sufficient balance the cheque is returned stating ‘insufficient balance’
and red entry ‘Bounced Cheque’ is made in the daily Cash Register as well as in the account
holder’s record against this cheque. The valid cheque is sent back to the cashier pays the forwarder
the desired amount.

You are required to assume that a Management Information System is required to be


developed for the above described case study, and you have to apply the steps of security
SDLC (Software Development Life Cycle) as discussed in class to provide information
security related recommendations for development of this information system.
