Stage 1: Technology and its effects on environment (1 st week)

Go to unit 1.1. Time Relationships1 in the Knowledge

Environment and develop the following activities:

Write about technological advancement and the effect on the
ecosystem.

- Text length: 100 words

- Write about: What do you think are negative or positive
effects of technology on the environment? How did it affect
to Climate Change in the last decades? Did it cause
environmental pollution or natural resources scarcity?
- You can use the following text as an example:

Technology has, definitely, brought better quality of life to us, but,

indubitably new inventions and industrialization represent a catastrophe
for our environment.
For instance, in the past, long distances were impossible until fossil fuel
powered cars were invented. They use petrol and diesel that produce
carbon dioxide (CO2). This is the most abundant greenhouse gas in our
atmosphere and now thanks to this invention, the concentration of CO2
increased and stands at over 400 parts per million.

As we can see, technology has affected negatively our environment.

Consequently, now we suffer from air, water and noise pollution and
resources shortage.

Stage 2: Technology and global warming (2nd week)

Go to unit 1.2. If clauses and results clauses in
conditional sentences2 in the Knowledge Environment
and develop the following activities:

a. Write a paragraph answering this question: What do you think will

The impact of technology, I believe that has been acting for some time
in the social, environmental damage, land degradation, global warming,
economic and cultural changes. How these environmental damages in
developing countries due to their rapid urbanization, consumption levels
and if people do not change their habits the impact will increase.
Stage 3: What can be done? 2.1 (3rd week)

Go to unit 2.1. Wish to express hypothetical

situations in the Knowledge environment and develop
the following activities:

Write your advice on how we can contribute to the improvement of

current environmental crisis. Use the following vocabulary for the text:

Governments… United Nations (UN)… measures… take actions…

sustainable development… policies… climate policy… eco-friendly
technology… it is necessary… I recommend… I would… etc…
For a long time, the United Nations (UN) and governments pay little
attention to possible damage to the environment through the use of
technological resources, without analyzing the ecological, social and
human consequences that its use may generate. Technology can serve
to help preserve the environment with green technology.
Stage 4: Write a letter (4th week)
According to the previous writing exercises, you will design a formal
letter addressed to the UN Secretary-Executive (200 words) including
the following steps:

Dear Mr. Guterres,

I’m writing to express my concern on how technology has affected the environment.
First of all, I would like to say that the more technological advances there are in our
society, the more our mother nature suffers. It can be seen in manufacturing,
production of machines, mining and fracking, all of them for a better quality of life.

If people continue being so keen about technology, we will end up in a catastrophe.

Littering, excessively consuming and allowing industries to hydraulic fracturing and
doing ‘not so green’ processes will be a total damage for our natural resources,
animals and landscapes. But even sadder it is to see how some governments are not
acting against this detriment of our environment, as it happens in Colombia, my
country.

Technology-related pollution in all types is now a reality, nonetheless maybe we are

still on our way to stop it. That’s why, I and on behalf of the environment, want to ask
you respectfully to get more involved in this situation. We need you to address the
governments all over the world to work together and take actions against
environmental detriment
