EXPERIMENT 11

To study the effect of Duct bents and valves on pressure drop of air in HVAC Ducting.

Procedure:
1. Switch on the apparatus.
2. Check all the valves are open.
3. Insert the pitot tube knobs at different sections and calculate the pressure difference.

Calculations:

Pressure drop for 900 sharp edge bent: 14.9304 Pa

Pressure drop for contraction: 12.93968 Pa

Pressure drop for 1800 round U- bent: 4.9768 Pa

Pressure drop for 900 round bent: 19.40952 Pa

Comments and Conclusions:

In this experiment, effect of different Duct bents and valves on pressure drop of air in HVAC ducting
is investigated.
We have concluded that, since the presence of a fitting changes the airflow direction and
turbulence around its close neighboring fitting and consequently modifies the U factor, the pressure
losses across the neighboring fitting are changed substantially. These findings imply that the
calculation of pressure losses across multiple closely mounted fittings via summing those across
individual fittings is inaccurate. As we increase the bents, the minor losses also increase.
