Objective: To identify the forms of gender discrimination, the difficulties that victims of gender

discrimination face, and to propose solutions regarding the issue of gender discrimination

Greetings, Mr Ronnie, I am Lau Jia Ann

Before I start, I would like to ask a question. As a boy, what is your first impression when I
simply say that you behave like a girl. Or when a girl tells you she falls in love with a girl. Most of
the people might feel uneasy and act unfriendly to them. Such implicit bias is the result of
gender discrimination and it is a very serious issue. Thus, we are going to discover how gender
discrimination affects lives, especially in respect of sexual orientation

According to Langston University, gender discrimination is unequal or disadvantageous

treatment of an individual or group of individuals based on gender. This unequal treatment can
come in many forms, including sexism or implicit bias. My main focus will be implicit bias
including LGBTI issues

As reported by The Equal Rights Trust (ERT) and Tenaganita, they publish an article about,
“Addressing discrimination and Inequality in Malaysia”, the article indicates that the rights of
LGBTI persons in Malaysia are seriously undermined by the law, which create a perception that
same-sex relationships are criminalized, and rights violations regularly occur.

Some evidence indicates that LGBTI persons, specifically in respect of children are suffered
discrimination in Muslim-Majority Malaysia. Thomson Reuters in New Straits Times, reported a
brutal attack occurred in Seremban where a transgender person was beaten up by a group of
assailants. There are also cases where a child is isolated or being bullied in school just because
he is a gay or lesbian.

It is significantly unfair for ignoring their right to live peacefully and safely, even though you may
have disagreement with this group of people. Nevertheless, what even worse is LGBTI
communities face significant challenges for those seeking to promote the right to equality
irrespective of sexual orientation. This is just because it is hard to collect concrete evidence
showing the discrimination faced by them.

In the same article reported by The Equal Rights Trust (ERT) and Tenaganita, Malaysia has
joined the Committee on the Rights of the Child, which has confirmed that the rights of children
under the Convention should be guaranteed without discrimination on the ground of, inter alia,
sexual orientation.

The rights of individuals to be free from discrimination on the grounds of both sexual orientation
and gender identity have been clarified by the Yogyakarta Principles, which elaborate the
application of international human rights law in relation to sexual orientation and gender identity.
It’s important to understand that throughout this project, we should not ignore the damage that
gender discrimination brings to the society and victims suffering becuase of it. Primarily, it is
necessary to cure gender inequality in order to secure a safe society.
