Students take a detailed look at one of main characters in a novel or short story with these easy-to-use graphic
organizers. Includes 17 pages to lead students through the process of writing a character analysis about their
favorite character. Students must apply their knowledge of characterization to either a paragraph or essay.
• Uses the STEAL Acronym to help students learn about indirect characterization—Speech, Thoughts, Effect on
others, Actions, Looks
• Depending on the age / ability of your students, you may use either the short version or the long version of the
character analysis assignment.
• I usually spend quite a bit of time talking about the characters throughout the novel and encourage the
students to take notes as they read, either in their notebooks or the included sheet.
• Pair up students who are writing about the same character and have them help each other with brainstorming
and planning.
• Have the class work together on brainstorming ideas about the main characters—this should help your
struggling writers get started.
