Preliminary Grade

The Huntsman - Leslie Fly

This piece has a spirited character and should not be played too slowly. In bars I and 2 the left hand echoes
the right hand, but in bars 3 and 4 it is more of an accompaniment figure and should be softer, as the right
hand plays the melody, A steady four beats per bar is required.

On the River - Alan Bullard

This piece should move along at a flowing pace. The upbeat is played with the left hand but is really a paít
of the right hand melody, so take care to ensure thata legato line is maintained. Dynamic marks are indicated
- these will help to add shape and colour to the melody, The accompaniment should be played quietly.
The Curious Cat - John Mclachlan
The composer has given a lot of phrase markings and dynamics in this piece, so these details should be
carefully observed. It is also important to take note of the various tempo markings:
Allegro Comodo, Rit, Meno Mosso, Accel and A kmpo - these will add another dimension to the
performance.

Hungarian Dance - George Coulter

A short and crisp staccato touch is required in this piece, and a quick tempo is indicated to help convey the
character of this dance. The left hand can be played quietly, while the right hand adopts a more rob1,1stforte
to really bring this to life! Hold all of the semibreves for their full value.

Snow White - Leslie Fly

This is a very elegant piece, and requires a legato touch throughout. For bars 1 to 8 the right hand has the
melody, but from bar 9 the left hand takes on more melodic interest * so listen carefully to the balance
between melody and accompaniment throughout the piece. Aim to show contrast between the p, mf andf
dynamics that are indicated.

The Polar Bear - arr Pauline Hall

This piece should be played at a flowing tempo, with a singing melody line in the right hand. The piece is
written in the key of C Major, but watch out for the F sharp in the left hand atbar 6! Aim for a legato line
in the right hand, and aim to add shape to the phrase line. The left hand can be played gently throughout.

The Wise Elephant - David Blackwell

This piece is perfect for working on left hand tone, as the melody is in the bass throughout. The right hand
chords should be played softly, and all rests should be observed. The dotted rhythms need to be carefully
counted throughout, and the dynamic markings should be observed. Think about elephants and their heavy
ibotsteps, and try to bring out that character! The repeats should not be played in an exam performance.

Tarantella - Scotson Clark, ed Pauline Hall

_\ tarantella is a dance, so this piece requires a brisk pace. Tidy fingerwork is necessary and it is really
important to keep a steady beat throughout. Lines 1 and 3 are identical, so this will cut down on the learning!
_\dd dynamics to give this even more energy and sparkle!

_{ Ball -Iza Garztecka

_{ lively tempo is required here, and a bouncy staccato touch. Be sure to hold the dotted minims for their
full value throughout. The dynamics are not written in here, so experiment with a few different dynamics
and see what works best! Keep a steady tempo from beginning to end, and watch out for the accidentals.

Piper in the Forest - Alan Bullard

It is easy to begin this piece too fast, as the left hand is very straight-forward with minims and semibreves,
but the right hand fingerwork is tricky and requires care, so be sure to start at a manageable pace. There
should be lovely contrast between the right hand staccato and legato notes, and pay attention to the dynamic
nrarkings that are indicated.

The Witch's Lair - Pauline Hall

In this piece the melody moves between the right and left hands, so it is important to listen closely to the
balance and try not to let the accompaniment overshadow the melody. The tempo is not particularly fast, but
it should have a sense of flow Pay careful attention to the phrase markings and dynamics.

The Cow Jumped Over the Moon - Joan Last

This is a very lively piece - full of energy and spirit! The time signature (6/8) indicates that there should be
a feeling of two beats per bar, so try not to play this too slowly or it will become laboured. Watch out for
rhe left hand - it moves between bass clef and treble clef a number of times throughout the piece. The
dr-namic markings range from pp to ffi so there should be a very wide range of colours here. The final note
should be played an octave higher than it is written (as indicated by the sign 8ve).
