INTRODUCTION

Students have been working with counting on, friends of 10, doubles, and 10 plus
strategies. The goal for this week is to further solidify these mental strategies so that
they come more naturally to the students.

Today, I wanted to show students that when a part of their addition equation is 9 …
they can turn it into a 10 and then subtract 1 from the other part. This is a helpful
strategy because adding with 9 can seem tricky at first glance.
BODY
STRATEGY: Make a 10 in Place of 9

Review 10 Plus Facts

I will review the 10 plus facts and the 10 partners that we learned in previous lessons.
Knowing these will help us with the strategy of turning a 9 into a 10.

Show students a “making 10 to add” example where I will write out an equation with 3
numbers (e.g. 9 + 4 → 9 + 1 + 3 → 10 + 3 = 13).

Option 1
We can also turn a 9 addend into a 10 and then subtract 1 from the other addend.
We then end up with two equations which are equal.

● 9+6=?
● 10 + 5 = 15 … this is the same as 9 + 6 = 15

We have been using this strategy for finding 10 in various equations. We need to
continue practicing with it.

Students will take out their “10 frames blocks” for today’s activity. They will build 9
plus equations and “Make a 10 to Add.” They will then identify the 10 plus equation
that equals the same sum. This involves removing 1 from the part that is not 9 and
adding it to the 9 part.

Option 2 (extension)
Talk with students about how if we turn a 9 addend into a 10, we can solve using the
10 and then remove 1 from the sum we get. Using 10 makes the equations bigger
because 10 is 1 more than 9.

● 9+6=?
● 10 + 6 = 16 … take away 1
● 9 + 6 = 15

CONCLUSION

Formative Assessment
Ask students 9 plus equations and have students explain how they can make a 10 to
add. Because students have practiced with manipulatives, now I want to assess if
students are understanding the concept in just numerical terms.

I will collect the resources and students will prepare for the next lesson.
