Prefatory Note ly commissioned in 1949 by Woody Herman for his Band, PRELUDE, FUGUE AND RIFFS was to be part of a series of jazz inspired works that already included Stravinsky's EBONY CONCERTO. Leonard’ Bernstein completed his work in November 1949, but by then Herman's group had disbanded, and he never performed the work, nor did he pursue the jazz series project any further. PRELUDE, FUGUE AND RIFFS lay dormant until 1952, when Mr. Bernstein revised it for a more conventional pit orchestra, in order to incorporate the work as a ballet sequence in the musical comedy WONDERFUL TOWN. This new version did not survive its out-of-town tryout, but bits of the music remain in the show as part of the "Conquering the City" dance and the "Conversation Piece” quartet. ‘The premiere performance of PRELUDE, FUGUE AND RIFFS took place on Mr. Bernstein's Omnibus telecast, "What is Jazz?", October 16, 1955, with Benny Goodman, soloist. Mr. Bernstein has twice recorded PRELUDE, FUGUE AND RIFFS: with Mr. Goodman on Columbia Records (now SONY) MI6077/MS6677, and with Peter Schmidl and members of the Vienna Philharmonic on Deutsche Grammophone in 1988.
