n one San Francisco neighbourhood, the
houses line up in an array of architectural
eras and styles. Among these, one
Modernist-inspired home stands out. A
visual delight of polished concrete, defused
light and an interplay of geometric forms, it is
more than just a pretty face. It was also built
with a high sustainability quotient, from the site
selection to the building materials, and from the
construction method to the finishes.
“The design started out as a very high-end
spec house for an unknown client,” says Jim
Zack, principal of San Francisco-based Zack |
deVito Architecture and its sister company
BuiltForm Construction, the home’s designer
and builder. As the house progressed, however,
his firm personalised the details and finishes,
with a resulting 3,150 sq-ft, three-storey
residence for homeowner Connie R Curran.
At the entrance, a grand staircase teases the
eye with vertical dimension, entwining three
storeys. A square window in the foyer reveals a
