skills in interpolation and

PART 1. PREDICTING
Look at the pictures below and then, draw a picture of what might happen later and write a

description about what will happen next (predicting).

I predict that the man will fall.

1.

2.
I predict that it will rain.

PART 2. GROWING SEEDS

Predict what will happen to the growth of seeds (Grow a lot, Grow a little, Not grow at all)

considering the situations below.

GROWING CONDITIONS
PREDICTION
(HOW THE SEED WILL BE PLANTED)

1.The seed will be given water and

sunlight.
The plant will grow healthy.

2.The seed will be given water, but

will not be given sunlight.
The plant will die.

3. The seed will not be given water,

but will be given sunlight.
The plant will be dry.

4. The seed will not be given water,

and will not be given sunlight.
The plant will not grow.

PREDICTING: Interpolation and Extrapolation

INTERPOLATION is an estimation of a value within two

known values in a sequence of values. When graphical OBJECTIVE

To make predictions based on
data contains a gap, interpolation allows us to estimate

evidence or data; and

the values within the gap.  On the other hand,

EXTRAPOLATION is an estimation of a value based on

extending a known sequence of values or facts beyond

To be able to demonstrate skills
the area that is certainly known. Extrapolating is inferring in interpolation and extrapolation.
something that is not explicitly stated from existing

information.

PART 3. INTERPOLATION
Interpolate the height of plant by referring to the Figure 1. (Plant height over days after
germination). Write your answers on Table 1.

What method of prediction did you use, interpolation or extrapolation? Explain.

____________________________________________________________________
Interpolation, because it estimates the value within two gaps.

PART 4. EXTRAPOLATION
1. Refer to the Figure 1 and answer the following question.
a. What will be the possible height of the plant after 12 days of germination?
____________________________________________________________________
30 in.
b. Which prediction method did you use, interpolation or extrapolation? Explain why you used that method.
extrapolation because we extended the x-axis and y-axis.

2. Refer to the Figure 1 and answer the following question.

a. What will be the possible height of the plant after 20 days of germination?
____________________________________________________________________
50 in.
b. Which prediction method did you use, interpolation or extrapolation? Explain why you used that method.
extrapolation because day 20 is not in the graph

PART 5. POST-ACTIVITY QUESTIONS

In the COVID-19 pandemic, the medical experts have played a significant role in monitoring and providing
estimates of cases after a certain period of time. These estimates help support the need for medical
recommendations (e.g. mass testing and contact tracing).
1. Are predictions of the experts valid? Why do you think so? (2 pts)
____________________________________________________________________
yes

2. Which prediction method did the experts used, interpolation or extrapolation? Support your answer. (2 pts)
