1. Do you think that the filmic image is a motivated or an

arbitrary sign ? Answer with reference to the theoretical
dilemmas attending the project of film semiotics in the 1960s.

2. Why does Christian Metz identify the ‘syntagma’ as a

fundamental unit of film narrative ? Explain any one
syntagmatic unit in his classificatory schema with suitable
examples.

3. How does the emergence of the ‘gaze’ on the screen

distabilize the narrative economy in a fiction film ? Discuss
with reference to specific examples.
