9-2 Reflections

Reflections - a transformation with the following properties:

 If a point A is on line m, then the image of A is itself (that is, A’ = A).
 If a point B is not on line m, then m is the ⟘ bisector of ̅̅̅̅̅
𝐵𝐵′ (that is, B
and B’ are equidistant from m at a 90° angle).
 Written 𝑅𝑚 (𝑃) = 𝑃′ (reflection of P over line m results in P’).
Ex: 𝑅𝑥=−2 (𝐴) = 𝐴′

Line of Reflection - the line that a preimage is reflected over to get the
image.

Properties of Reflections -
 Reflections preserve distance.
If 𝑅𝑚 (𝐴) = 𝐴′, and 𝑅𝑚 (𝐵) = 𝐵′, then
AB = 𝐴′𝐵′.
 Reflections preserve angle measure.
If 𝑅𝑚 (∠𝐴𝐵𝐶 ) = ∠𝐴′𝐵′𝐶′, then m∠𝐴𝐵𝐶
= m∠𝐴′𝐵′𝐶′.
 Reflections map each point of the
preimage to one and only one
corresponding point of it image.
𝑅𝑚 (𝐴) = 𝐴′ if and only if 𝑅𝑚 (𝐴′) = 𝐴
