Hydorological Engineering Task

Water flows in an open channel whose slope is 0,04%. The Manning roughness coefficient
of the channel lining is estimated to be 0,035, and the flowrate is 200 m3/s. At a given
section of the channel, the cross section is trapezoidal, with a bottom width of 10 m, side
slopes of 2:1 (H:V) and a depth of flow of 7 m. Use the standard-step method to calculate
the depth of flow 150 m upstream from this section, where the cross section is trapezoidal,
with a bottom width of 17 m and side slopes of 3:1 (H:V).

m=3 y = ... m

b = 17 m

Section 1

m=2 y=7m

b = 10 m

Section 2

Solution:
The channel along with the upstream and downstream channel sections is illustrated in
Figure above. In this case,
Q = 200 m3/s
n = 0.035
b1 = 17 m
m1 = 3
b2 = 10 m
m2 = 2
y2 = 7 m
y1 = … m

A2 = [b2 + m2y2]y2 = 168 m2

P2 = b2 + 2y2√1 + m22 = 41.3 m
R2 = 𝐴2/𝑃2 = 4.07 m
𝐴2/𝑃2

V2 = 𝑄/𝐴2 = 1.19 m/s

[𝑛𝑄/
Sf2 = (𝐴2𝑅2^(2/ = 0.000267
3) )]^2

Assume y1 = 7.03 m
A1 = [b1 + m1y1]y1 = 267.8 m2
P1 = b1 + 2y1√1 + m12 = 61.5 m
R1 = 𝐴1/𝑃1 = 4.36 m

V1 = 𝑄/𝐴1 = 0.75 m/s

[𝑛𝑄/
Sf1 = (𝐴1𝑅1^(2/
= 9.61E-05 9.6038889E-05
3) )]^2

The average slope between Sections 1 and 2, Sf, is therefore given by

Sf = (𝑆𝑓1+𝑆𝑓2) = 0.000182
/2

Substituting the flow parameters into the energy equation, Equation 3.139, and taking the
velocity coefficients, α1 and α2, to be equal to unity yields
∆L = [𝑦+ = 63 m
α 〖𝑣 /2𝑔
〗 ^2 ]/(𝑆𝑓
−𝑆0)
Therefore, the depth of the flow 150 m upstream is 7,03 m
