FD 200 – Foundations II: Christian Worldview

Reflection Paper – Rethinking Worldview by J. Mark Bertrand

Chapter 5: The Principal Thing: Regaining Wisdom

Main Points
1. This chapter began a new section on wisdom, transitioning from worldview as a mindset
to worldview as a lifestyle. Seeking wisdom is an extremely helpful and necessary thing
to do, but we must simply make sure to seek the right wisdom – with the right intentions.
2. Wisdom should naturally follow worldview, putting into action the beliefs that we hold.
“God expects us not just to think, but to live” (Bertrand, 2007).
3. In order to gain and implement wisdom, we must be sure to gain it from God – and it is
as simple as asking. Seek Him, study His word, and test your decisions against it.
Wisdom is a process which develops over time.

Insights

 For all we say about receiving wisdom, we are the ones who so often brush it off as
unattainable. We deny the wisdom we hear, because it is not always what we want to
hear or the way that we want to hear it.
 This is not a journey toward greater knowledge or understanding; it is based from the
presupposition of knowledge and is the call to action. Too often, the church as a whole is
disinclined to exemplify Christlike wisdom, turning in favor of their own traditions and
rules.

Application
I need to attune my attention to God’s guidance, discerning what is wisdom and
following after it. I need to show Christlike wisdom as well for non-Christians, to bear a greater
testimony.
