Research Title: The COVID-19 Pandemic and Its Effects on the Spending Behavior of PUP

Students on Mobile Games

Rationale of the Study

The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has brought the entire world to a

relative standstill, affecting millions worldwide (World Health Organization [WHO] 2020). With

the absence of an effective vaccine, public health measures have been implemented by

governments worldwide, such as quarantine, closing workplaces (including schools and

businesses), and social distancing. One area that has been relatively unaffected during the

pandemic is the gaming industry, with its user engagement growing considerably during this

period. To date, online gaming has played a supporting role in public health efforts to enforce

effective social distancing during the pandemic and has been supported by the World Health

Organization’s collaborative campaign (#PlayApartTogether) with the online gaming industry

encouraging individuals to stay at home and limit the spread of the virus. From this, the

researchers aim to know the impact of COVID-19 on spending behavior of PUP students in
mobile gaming before the pandemic and the current lockdown. The data will be gathered by

conducting a survey in the form of questionnaires or online forms. The respondents targeted for

the study will be PUP students playing mobile games. The study shall test whether to accept or

reject the null hypothesis that there is no significant impact in the spending behavior of PUP

students in mobile gaming because of the pandemic.
