This question paper has 02 sections, Section 1 and Sec questions including the question in Section 2. ion 2. Answer only Three (03) All questions in Section 1 carry equal marks. Marks assigned to questions within a question are given, Write the relevant numbers of the questions to which you provide answers in the cage on the cover page of the answer book. Start answering each question from a fresh page of the answer book and write the relevant question number at the top of the page. Use sketches to explain your answers wherever relevant. Neat and clear handwriting and steps involved in calcul ions are extremely important. Delete any material, which does not require the attention of the examiner, by drawing a line over such material Use only black ink pens to write answer Marks will be deducted if the above instructions are not adhered to. Section 1 Question 1 A. A column 203 x 203 UC 86 transmit a factored load of 700 KN and factored moment of 45 kNm. Characteristic strength of concrete used under the slab base is 25 N/mm2. Preliminary size of the slab base has been selected as 450 mm long and 360 mm wide. i. Check whether the given base sizes (length and width) are adequate to assure pressure over the whole base. [4 marks] Find the maximum and minimum bearing pressures under the base considering the given sizes of the slab base. [4 marks] iii, Determine the thickness of the slab base required. [6 marks] B. Check whether the bracketed connection shown in Figure 1 is adequate following the steps given below. i, Find the maximum shear force and tensile forces applied to a critical bolt. 17 marks} ii, Determine the shear capacity and tensile capacity of the bolt. [7 marks] Check whether the interaction expression for combined tension and shear is satisfied. [5 marks} Question 2 The Figure 2 shows a continuous edge column in a simple construction of a braced stee! building. ‘The column is effectively pinned at the base and beams are connected to the column flange by flexible end plates. The UC section used are in $275 steel. Ultimate loads transferred from second floor is 350 KN and ultimate loads transferred by each beams are as shown in the figure are, R1=50 KN, R2= 160 KN, R3 = 30 KN, Check whether the column section 203x203UC46 is adequate for the column segment in-between ground floor to first floor considering the following steps. a. What do you understand by “simple design” under methods of design according to BS 5950. [5 marks} b. Find the design ultimate axial load on the column. You may disregard the self weight of the column, [2 marks} c. Find the design ultimate moments on the column [7 marks} d._ Classify the section given [5 marks] €. Find the slenderness of the column and compression resistance in both axis, [6 marks] £. Check the interaction expression for the combined axial force and the moment, [8 marks] Question 3 The simply supported beam over a span of 10 m, supports a uniformly distributed characteristic dead and imposed loads of 7 kN/m and 3 kN/m respectively, as well as characteristic imposed point load of 25 kN at mid span assuming the beam is laterally unrestrained. The compression flange is laterally restrained and the beam fully restrained against torsion at support but both flanges are free to rotate on plan. The loading is normal. The selected section is 610x229x140UB. 8. Draw the design ultimate moment and shear force diagrams showing critical values. [5 marks} b. Classify the selected section [5 marks] c. [8 marks] Section 2 Question 4 A pre-stressed concrete bridge beam has an unsymmetrical I section with an overall depth of 1840 mm. top and bottom flange widths are 1800 mm and 820 mm respectively. Thickness of top flange varies from 180 mm at the ends to 430 mm at the junction of the web which is 180 mm thick. The thickness of the bottom flange varies from 150 mm at the ends to 450 mm at the junction of the web. The beam is to be designed for a simply supported span of 30 m, as a post-tensioned class 1 member. Beam is to support a dead load of 10 kN/m and a live load of 18 KN/m. ‘Assume short term prestress loss as 10% and long term prestress loss as 20%. Unit weight of concrete is 24 kN/m3. Characteristic compressive strength at transfer is 30 N/mm2 and that at service is 50 N/mm2 Cross section properties of the beam are as follows in usual notation. Cross section area = 1016500 mm2 Second moment of area = 4442 x 108 mm4 Distance to top fiber from center of gravity of the section =700 mm Distance to bottom fiber from center of gravity of the section = 1140 mm Cover to centroid of the tendon from the soffit is 130 mm. Find the stress limits (allowable stresses) of extreme fibers [4 marks} b.
