Ch-03: Laws of Motion

Lect-01
Different Types of Forces
Contact Forces Non-Contact Forces
1. Normal Reaction 1. Gravitational
2. Tension Force Force
3. Spring Force 2. Electrostatic Force
4. Friction Force 3. Magnetic Force

Another common force is Weight

1. Weight (W)
The weight of an object is equal to the
gravitational force with which the each pulls it
downward.
Common unit: kgf; 1kgf=9.8 N
2. Normal Reaction (N)
Normal Reaction is a contact Force between two surfaces in
contact , which is always perpendicular to the surfaces in
contact.
Tension (T)
➢ Intermolecular force between atoms of string, which
acts when the string is stretched.

➢ Tension Force acts on a body in the direction away

from the point of contact.

➢If string is massless & frictionless, the tension

throughout the string remains constant.

Newton’s Ist law of motion
“Every body continues in its state of rest or of
uniform motion along a straight line unless it is
compelled by some external force to change its state”.
