DESIGN PARAMETERS

Course/programme description:

I offer Information and Communication Technology. Information and Communication Technology is a

course that develops students’ understanding of the implication of technology on many different aspects
of life, these include the home, work, and learning environments. There are two areas covered in the
course, that is, the theoretical and practical. These areas cover ICT concepts on ethics, software
applications, databases and web design.

As partly highlighted, students in this course will learn the theoretical and practical aspects of ICT, such
that, at the end of the course, students should be able to:
 Understand and use applications
 Use information and Communication Technology (ICT) to solve problems
 Analyze, design, implement, test, and evaluate ICT system, ensuring that they are fit for purpose
 Understand the implications of technology in society, including social, economic and ethical uses
 Be aware of the ways ICT can help in home, learning and work environment
These are generic objectives of the course. They can be further dissected in many other objectives.

Course/programme context:

My Institution, Chalo Trust School, is located in Zambia. Chalo Trust School is a Private School. The
context is NOT very well established financially and therefore lacks latest technologies to foster the full
implementation and/or appreciation of the course.

Student demographics and description:

In this course, there are no more than 20 students with the age groups oscillating between 16 and 19
years. The students are in their Secondary/High School level as the age outlines. Because of the blended
learning, the students are computer literate. As highlighted in the Course context, institutional lack of
technologies extends students’ needs. This implies that students lack resources to help them in their
learning.

Available and required resources:

Though leaping, there is internet connection (resource) – the internet connection is based on 30 days
bundle subscription, that is about 120 GB, computer lab with about 19 computers; School Support Hub
where all learning and teaching material can be accessed from; and classroom where most discussions are
done.

Learning objectives: The following learning objectives will not be exhaustive. The objectives are on the
effects of using IT
 describe how there has been a reduction of employment in offices, as workers’ jobs have been
replaced by computers in a number of fields (e.g. payroll workers, typing pools, car production
workers)
 describe how there has been an increase in employment in other fields (e.g. website
designers, computer programmers, delivery drivers in retail stores)
 describe how the use of computers has led to a number of employees changing their
working patterns (e.g. part-time working, flexible hours, job sharing, compressed hours)
 describe what is meant by part-time working, flexible hours, job sharing, compressed
hours
 describe the positive effects microprocessors have on aspects of lifestyle (e.g. the amount
and use of leisure time, the degree of social interaction, the ability to leave the home)
 describe the negative effects microprocessors have on aspects of lifestyle (e.g. lack of
exercise)

DESIGN RATIONALE

The design is thought to be effective because it merges well with the context and the level of learner. The
design incorporates face-to-face and online learning, a kind of flipped-classroom. In this paradigm, all
learners are able to participate to the online class discussions without feeling shy; classroom sessions (in-
person) are conducted to consolidate online discourses.
