I. Introduction

JY: Hello Pusong Canossians! Another school year will soon start in a couple of weeks. Canossa School Santa
Rosa provides you series of infographics, helpful advisories and reminders as we all journey towards August
24, 2020.

JU: That is right! In addition to this, we present to you the following frequently asked questions from our
students and parents and the answers provided by our sisters, administrators, teachers and staff.

JY: Bring out your listening ears! Here are the most frequently asked questions for school year 2020-2021.

II. General Questions

JU: Are you the same as I am? I cannot seem to differentiate and grasp the difference between modular and
distance learning.

JY: It’s alright Julianna. Online Distance Learning or ODL and Modular Distance Learning or MDL are both
forms of distance learning which refers to teaching and learning where the teacher delivers instruction from
afar. ODL relies on the online resources and tools to deliver instruction while MDL relies on the offline
resources like printed modules or learning package and flash drives to deliver instruction, both ensuring
learning.

JU: Got it! Thanks Jyruz! But with this, do you have an idea what will our teachers do?

JY: Yes, our teachers are considered experts who provide essential learning experiences channeled through
various online and offline technologies, and who provide instructional support that enable us to construct
knowledge, meaning and transfer learning in different situations. They track and record our completion and
mastery and will be scheduled student-teacher consultation and tutoring.

JU: I see. You know what? Even our parents also have important roles even before the set-up we have right
now. They act not necessarily as imparters of knowledge, but as learning coaches at home who will help us
process and own learning and encourage us to comply with the things needed to be done for school. They can
help us monitor track our progress, current, completed and expired tasks.

JY: You are right Julianna! Of course, we, as students, have responsibilities and roles as well. We are
expected to maintain and sustain engagement and interaction for better learning. Our active role in the learning
process is required such as exploring the materials, reading literatures, watching videos, answering
worksheets or discussion forums and video or phone conferencing. We complete our work on our pace and
time with or without internet.

JU: That is why collaborative relationship among us, our teachers and parents is vital and essential for better
learning outcome. Not only that, the school even gives extended student support to ensure learning and
holistic formation.

JY: True that! There will be parents and student’s orientations which includes navigation of SCHOOL’S
LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS for familiarity with schoolwork flow during online distance learning
while a walk-through of the learning package or modules for familiarity will be given for modular distance
learning.
JU: In addition, the orientation also includes the teachers, parents’ and students’ role and responsibilities in the
context of the Pusong Canossian Learning from Home Program implementation together with tips in fostering
physical, digital, mental, social, emotional, and spiritual wellness balanced with practice and life-skills.

JY: Not only that, there will be a class adviser and a Canossian Spirituality or CS teacher assigned per section
as well as responsive teaching specialist or RTS and Guidance Counsellor per level.

JU: I cannot wait to meet them! Our teachers will also share the course outline, learning goals, checklist of
tasks with rubrics, and calendar to help our parents monitor our requirements.

JY: How convenient! There are also teachers available for consultation as specified in the Class and
Consultation Schedule. There is also the On—Demand Learner Support Services which is available during
class days as additional assistance for student’s needs.
*Wait for contact information*

JU: Other than this, the parents will be given timely feedback regarding their children’s performance. Now
that’s Pusong Canossian Service!

JY: You’re right. Canossa School also further explained that our CLE, MAPEH and TLE subjects will not use
academic approach but rather will focus on the student’s over-all well-being: spiritual development, recreational
activities/ physical/ mental wellness and health, practical life and home skills, respectively.

JU: Formation of the Heart Activities such as Year-level/Class Mass, Devotional Prayers, Recollections or
Retreats, Counselling Services, Orientation Services, Career Fair Exhibit, and relevant Student Program
Activities, among others will also be extended online.

JY: Thank you Julianna, finally, we are all curious about the required textbooks for this school year. For the five
major subjects – English, Mathematics, Science, Filipino and Araling Panlipunan – physical textbooks will still
be used as the main reference and work text for drills and exercises. Textbook will definitely aid student
learning and we can resort to using textbook whenever our internet connection fails. It also serves as somehow
a leverage for resource utilization for ODL and MD together with notebooks and writing materials.

III. ONLINE DISTANCE LEARNING

JU: Thanks for that Jyruz! Now, let us move to the next frequently asked questions solely about online distance
learning. In this type of distance learning, there are two types of activities that can be conducted namely
synchronous and asynchronous. Following the schedule, the type of activity that the teacher will use depends
on the learning objectives, type of content, and our availability.

JY: Synchronous activity happens in real time online interaction such as virtual classroom where the teacher
facilitates a class in real time to explain concepts/demonstrate skills or to conduct Question and Answer
discussion forums. It may also be used for purposes of ensuring students’ well-being through real time peer-to-
peer interactions, enable asking questions and receive answers on the spot while also collaborating freely with
their co-learners. For High School students, one synchronous session per subject in a week will be allotted
while for our younger learners, two synchronous sessions per subject in a week will be allocated.

JU: For asynchronous activity, it occurs through online resources without real-time interaction such as
independent work according to the learner’s pacing, pre-recorded video lessons or online forums and
discussion boards, blogs and the like. Learners are free to share thoughts and questions either with the
teacher and fellow learners though they may not receive an on-the-spot response similar to synchronous
session. Moreover, teachers are available on call during the subject schedule. Also, the responsive teaching
specialists are available during class days for extended assistance.

JY: But Julianna, what will happen if I missed a synchronous session with a valid reason for it?

JU: Don’t worry! Synchronous sessions deemed by the teacher as significant and crucial to the understanding
of the lesson shall be recorded and uploaded in the Learning Management System to make the live session
available to those who missed it for valid reason such as intermittent internet connectivity, technical problem,
student’s sickness, and the like.
JY: That’s good to hear!

JU: Do you have an idea what is a Learning Management System?

JY: A Leaning Management System is an online tool for the administration, documentation, tracking, reporting,
delivery, and assessment of educational courses in online distance learning that can be accessed anytime and
anywhere. With Genyo e-Learning, which has been used by HS for more than ten years and seven years for
GS, shall be utilized by GS and JHS for ODL. The teachers, students, and some parents are already familiar
with the system. While for Senior High, a new platform called V-Smart LMS shall be utilized

JU: To add, Genyo e-learning is an online learning management system that allows your children to continue
learning from home as it has ready-made interactive and digital resources, complemented by teacher made
and curated online resources. This tool will allow your children’s teachers to deploy lessons, activities, and
even assessments which your children can access at home.

JY: On the other hand, V-Smart LMS is a teaching and learning platform so that students may still continue
learning even at home. Through V-Smart LMS, Senior High students can take every lesson created by the
teachers, take tests online, and virtually interact with the teacher and class through livestreaming and chat.
Students output can also be submitted here online.

JU: The things we need to access Genyo e-Learning and V-Smart LMS are device be it desktop, laptop,
mobile devices that can either be tablet or phone, internet connection, student account to be provided by the
class adviser at the start of the school year consisting of the Log-in ID, School ID, and password.

JY: With this, keep in mind of the technical specifications for the device and recommended internet speed. If
you are using a laptop or desktop, it is advisable that the operating system is Windows or Mac OS; for the
processor it can be a dual core and up; for the RAM, it can be 2 gigabytes and up; for the HDD, it can be 320
gigabytes and up; the recommended browser is Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge; the recommended internet
speed is 2 MBPS for one user, 5 MBPS for two to three users, 20 MBPS for 5 to 10 users.

JU: These are all truly helpful! Might as well check my device later if they are all “back to school” ready. With
this, the school is considering Zoom, Google Meetings, and even other apps like Facebook Messenger Rooms
which can be legally used by learners below 13 years old. There are more than one options since in
synchronous session or video conferencing, the teacher should have plan B or plan C just in case technology
fails. For Senior High, students can virtually interact with the teacher and class through Livestream and Chat
features of V-Smart LMS.

JY: Nice! I cannot wait to try them out! Other than these application features, the Genyo e-learning is an
integrated learning tool and in general, where there are some things that students can do with the system. We
can access lessons prepared by the teachers, answer online tests, submit projects and tasks, access
educational games, have a virtual class with their teacher, have virtual interactions through chat rooms and
shared blogs, see announcements posted by the school administrators and teachers, see messages sent by
the teachers, answer online school evaluation and rating forms and see digital report cards.

JU: Genyo e-learning sure does help us especially during this flexible mode of delivery for this school year. If
those are the features for Genyo, on the other hand, V-Smart LMS, it is an all in one system for remote
instruction and classroom management. It has a mobile app that can be downloaded on both Android and iOS
devices and can be accessed online of offline.

JY: In addition, it contains a library of gamified and interactive learning resources. Digital attendance sheet
automatically checks who is present and absent. Free access to supplementary reading materials and
uploaded multimedia files to enrich students’ learning experience. There are free access to supplementary
reading materials and uploaded multimedia files to enrich students’ learning experience. It also provides free
access to ready-made digital K to 12 curriculum including learning modules based on DepEd’s budgeted
teaching and learning calendar; lessons prepared by teachers that fit student’s learning needs.
JU: Not only that, it also holds online classes and webinars with the livestream feature and discuss online
through chat. It creates and deploys exams that may also be randomized to avoid cheating. Grades are
automatically computed and displayed with electronic gradebooks.

JY: Talk about convenient right? Not only are Genyo e-learning and V-Smart LMS student-friendly, it also
benefits our dear parents. Parents can refer to the digital lessons given by the teachers and the ready-made
resources for guided learning environment within the safety of your own home. Parents can also monitor the
progress of their children as the lessons and tests taken by the students inside LMS are recorded in their
Genyo and V-Smart accounts. Parents can also view announcements posted by the school, and can download
the Digital Report Card.

JU: I’ll be sure to tell my parents this! Also, we are highly encouraged to change our account passwords for
security purposes. Now, in the event we forget our passwords, do not fret. There are four ways to recover our
password. First recover the account through the Forgot Password Feature. In www.genyo.com.ph, after
inputting the school ID, you will see a Forgot Password Link. Just follow the steps and the system will help you
recover it via e-mail. This will only work if you saved your e-mail address in your Genyo e-learning profile
beforehand. Second, ask you class adviser. You may contact your adviser to ask help regarding Genyo
Account Recovery.

JY: Third, contact the Genyo Learning Integration Specialist. Contact details will be given at the start of the
school year. Lastly, contact the Genyo Help Desk. Send a message via Facebook to recover the account.
Genyo’s official Facebook apge is @GenyoPH. Of course, it is not only the students have orientation regarding
the usage of Genyo. An online orientation shall be conducted before the school year start for our parents. Also,
the LMS team will be providing a step-by-step guides and video tutorials on the things that students and
parents need to know in using the platform which shall be uploaded in the LMS.

JU: Reminding us with the navigation of our LMS for this school year is surely convenient. Next is the
monitoring and management of our attendance. In the class schedule there is daily Class adviser’s time for
settling down, check-in for attendance and follow-up of students’ wellness. For the specific subjects,
attendance and punctuality will be checked during synchronous sessions wherein subject teacher and students
are online face-to-face for live discussions, clarifications or Q and A, or assessment. During asynchronous
sessions wherein students are independently completing assigned tasks per subject, attendance will not be
checked; however, our log-ins and completion of tasks can be monitored by the subject teacher through the
LMS.
JY: That’s right Julianna! In case, some of us are sick, we should notify our adviser. It will be the adviser who
will in turn inform the subject teachers. If your child missed the synchronous session, he or she may access its
recorded version through the LMS, while the asynchronous tasks may be completed when we recover from
being sick.

JU: We do hope we all keep safe and healthy as the school year progress. In case of a limited or unstable
internet connection, here are things to consider. Sectioning of students considered the internet bandwidth so
that learning resources format that the teacher will use may be adjusted accordingly without compromising the
content. If there are multiple students at home, give priority to student who is scheduled for synchronous
session (live discussions) and encourage them to stagger activities that will utilize significant bandwidth (e.g.
streaming video, video meetings, etc.). Anyway, asynchronous tasks may be accessed and completed
anytime when internet connectivity becomes stable.

JY: During synchronous session, turn off video and use audio only. Student may opt to work asynchronously or
use the textbook instead and access the recorded synchronous session later when connectivity becomes
stable. Improve your bandwidth by reducing the usage of other simultaneous services during class time (i.e.
Netflix, Spotify, YouTube, etc.). Contact your internet provider to increase your plan speed.

JU: Now we know what we will do if our internet connection suddenly becomes unstable. But how are we going
to manage sharing or use of gadgets if we have siblings who are enrolled in online distance learning as well?

JY: Well Julianna, the school understands such reality that there might be an overlap when two or more
students need to be online at home or when parents are also doing work from home. Here are few items that
may help you manage the sharing of gadgets. First, give priority to the student who is scheduled for
synchronous session (live discussion) whose duration could range from 20 minutes to a maximum of 50
minutes. Take note that for HS students, there’s only one synchronous session per subject in a week and for
younger learners, there’s only two synchronous sessions per subject in a week. The remaining class schedule
is allotted for asynchronous learning wherein flexibility in access time can be exercised since students are
doing independent learning.

JU: Not only that, mobile phone may be used by one student and computer may be used by the other student if
there’s overlapping synchronous sessions. Student may opt to work asynchronously or use the textbook
instead and access the recorded synchronous session later when learning gadget is available. Lastly, we can
contact the subject teacher ahead of time if there is conflict in the schedule of synchronous sessions.

JY: Now, all of your siblings can study and attend classes together. Next, the school has plans to conduct a dry
run of the Learning from Home Program in August 2020. We cannot do the dry run before enrollment since we
do not know yet the final enrollees who will choose Online Distance Learning or Modular Distance Learning.

JU: That’s right! Other than this, we know we are all excited about the sectioning of classes even before the
quarantine started. So, what will be the student-teacher ratio for synchronous learning? The school intends to
retain as much as possible the average class size of 35 to 45 students per section in High School, 27 to 35 per
section for Grades 1-6, maximum of 25 for Kindergarten, maximum of 15 for Nursery. Moreover, sectioning
during this temporary shift to “New Normal” will also consider the student survey result as to the internet
bandwidth at home so that the teachers can do the necessary adjustment regarding appropriate online and
offline resources. As much as possible, we are going to group together students under Modular Distance
Learning. However, much of the final decision will be based on the total number of enrollees.

JY: Furthermore, according to research, optimal class size in online learning vary depending on the type (e.g.
lower level vs. advanced) and goal (e.g. survey vs intensive writing) of the course. For example, a HS teacher
with 50 minutes synchronous activity in one section may utilize 20 minutes for “Hook” whole class session (10
minutes settling down, check-in and survey on prior knowledge + 10 minutes giving of instructions and tasks or
mini lesson); 25 minutes combination of synchronous and asynchronous “Engage” differentiated activities
based on survey result and learning style (asynchronous independent work for few, paired activity for some,
group work for others, and synchronous Teacher-Student interaction for selected students with identified
needs); and 5 minutes asynchronous “Reflect” activity for synthesis and self-reflection which shall be submitted
through Shared Blog in the LMS. Based on the learning goal, nature of the content, formative assessment
result, and student’s needs, the teacher will adjust modes of synchronous session as to whole class or cluster
or smaller group.

JU: Alright! Other than this concern, how can we manage our exposure to gadgets since we all know it is not
advisable to use it all day? Observing digital wellness, the school does not want our students to stare at
computer for 7 – 8 hours a day. In order to manage screen time, there is a provision of at least 15 minutes
break in between class periods. Textbooks will also be used by the teachers as part of the offline learning
activities. Moreover, Learning Management System is being utilized by the school for student safety and
security.

JY: For our parents and guardians, keep an eye on your child’s social media use, especially during an
extended class day closure. Social media apps such as Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp, or Tiktok are not
official, school sanctioned channels of communications. Use parental controls to block your child from
accessing specific websites, apps, or functions. Set up child-friendly search engines or select safe search
settings on digital devices to help prevent your child from stumbling across inappropriate sites and content.

JU: Furthermore, all GS and HS learners will subscribe to the school’s LMS, namely: Genyo e-Learning for GS
and JH; and V-Smart LMS for SH. All lessons, learning resources and web links will be uploaded by the
teachers in the LMS. Students without internet connectivity at home, may access or download the files when
they are in places with internet; nonetheless, we shall still provide printed learning package/modules as
alternative delivery mode.

JY: Finally, the school’s ODL is one mode of our flexible curriculum delivery during this time of pandemic crisis
so that student learning will continue even if physical classes are not yet allowed. ODL is not just a webinar or
short-term online course that attendees must simply complete and evaluate to earn a certificate.

IV. Modular Distance Learning

JU: Now that we covered Online Distance Learning, we now go to Modular Distance Learning. Printed
Learning package or module that contains the replicas of the subject matter, resources and instructional
materials used in online learning will be picked-up from school. Flash drive, downloaded videos, interactive
materials, and web pages, apps that have offline versions will be saved in a USB flash drive for offline viewing
in computer or mobile phone.

JY: We also need computer or mobile phone, textbooks for the five major subject (English, Mathematics,
Science, Filipino, and Araling Panlipunan); and notebooks and writing materials. Details regarding pick-up and
submission of required learning materials per level will be announced during parents’ orientation.

JU: In addition, there is no extra payment anymore for the printed modules/learning package. Flash drive which
is a personal property of the student, where replicas of online videos and related interactive resources will be
downloaded, shall be provided by the student.

JY: Other than this, parents/Guardians do not need to take over the role of your child’s teachers. Support your
child to learn independently at home. Encourage them to ask their teachers and classmates if they do not
understand their assignments. They can also seek assistance through our Modular Distance Learning Support
Services Hotline. Students are expected to follow the guidance given in the learning package and avoid
completing all the “work” sent in one sitting. Class schedule is recommended to be followed in completing the
assigned tasks.

JU: For younger children like the primary learners, however, you may need to supervise them to some extent
like providing reminders and ensuring that they are on task; but allow them to attempt the assignments on their
own. Parents are also encouraged to read recreationally with, and to your child. Subject teachers will be
available on-call as indicated in the class schedule aside from the specified slot for consultation for the five
major subjects.

JY: Teachers may also call the student or parent regularly for further follow-ups. If needed, you as
parent/guardian can also get in touch with your child’s teacher for clarifications. Responsive Teaching
Specialist (RTS) is also available for student and parent assistance.

JU: Finally, teachers will use a variety of ways to assess your child’s progress and provide you with timely
feedback, such as formative assessment, pre and post-tests, a collection of work samples, a self-assessment
and parent’s feedback, summative tests, and performance tests.

V. CONCLUSION

JY: There you have it, Pusong Canossians! We now have a quick navigation of all the most frequently asked
