Sunrise on the Alien Beach

Elements
Mood- My artwork creates a serene mood with the scene of a four sun rise over a pink alien
beach, but at the same time it’s a stark scene because of the way I utilized the elements of my
design.
 Line- I captured the element of line through my use of the three distinct zones of color
which are separated by a harder line which represents the division between the different
areas of the scene, and helps increase the stark nature of the scene. Also, I made use of
lines within the ocean zone to represent some movement of waves and water, so there
was a small sense of movement.

 Texture-All three different areas within my artwork contains different use of texture. The
alien space zone was created using a rough textured metal stair, this allowed for a good
amount of white spaces within the tan background. Therefore, it helped create the vision

of a densely populated yellow star field in a void of white that I used to represent alien
space. The ocean zone was created with a completely smooth material behind it, so it was
easier to represent the flowing nature of the water with some harder lines created using a
patterned stairstep to allow for an illusion of waves. The Beach zone was created on a
soft fluffy material. This allowed it to have a subtle shinny texture and small separation in
the solid color that can suggest the appearance of sand and mood that sand invokes.

 Space- I made use of this element to help give the sand of the beach zone a more realistic
nature. With the small holes of white created from the texture I drew the beach on, the
beach was more realistically sandy looking. I made use of this technique in the space
zone’s starfield to also suggest the nature of the densely populated void of space

 Shape- The use of circles in my drawing is probably the best example of the shape. The
use of half-circle’s and circles to represent different celestial bodies for the beach’s
starfield. These circles helped to add a variety to my piece that is was missing prior.

 Color- In this artwork I chose a triadic color design. I started with the tan color of the
background starfield, and its triadic colors were the blue, and the soft pink. The unity of
these colors caused me to change my work from a normal sandy beach with a pink sky
into an alien universe, because the colors were better used to invoke that mood.

 Value- In this work I chose to keep the value of it on the lighter side. This was to create a
mood of serene nature, and untouched by human hands. The lighter colors also helped to
really offset my use of darker color to represent the different suns and asteroids within
the alien starfield.

 Balance- My artwork has an asymmetrical balance considering that the top starfield is
filled with interesting celestial objects, but the beach is empty to symbolize the untouched
nature of the scene. I feel as though my art could have had a bit of a better balance, but I
feel it works.

 Proportion- Within my work I chose to create big suns in the foreground of the starfield,
and then to give the suns a better sense of size I chose to put smaller asteroids behind so
its known that each sun is an outrageous size in comparison.

 Rhythm- My artwork is one that has a slow rhythm due to the fact that it has no true
pattern, so the eyes track through it relatively slower than it would otherwise.

 Variation- In terms of variation I would say my artwork makes great use of that with its
color choices. No zone is the same color, and even within the starfield the celestial bodies
have a variation in both size and color.

 Contrast- I used contrast in the sheer difference in color between each of the three zones.
When the colors meet, the contrast is high enough that it adds a sense of separation and
that each zone isn’t necessarily on the same level as the others. So, the contrast allows a
greater division between each zone which adds to the alien nature of the scene.

 Unity/Harmony- My artwork does follow the use of unity and harmony. This is due to
the fact that the main colors of the piece are triadic in nature, therefore they go great
together and help add a sense of unity to the work.
