Introduction

Many Students find it difficult to choose their courses to take in college.

The pressure to choose the right one is very important and it needs to think about

wisely. Your future depends on it and the decision you will make would determine

what life you will have in the future. This is the first step in your life as an

independent person and this is the first step for your success. Along the process of

choosing your course, there will be some factors that you would need to consider

and this might help you pick the suitable and best choice for you. These factors

might include the opinion of your friends and family, your financial status, the

college or university you want, your personal interest and etc.

One of the high demand courses as of today is Architecture which is also

one of the hardest vocational courses to pursue. According to Merriam Webster

“Architecture is the art or science of designing and creating buildings. This course

requires a lot of dedication and willingness to pursue.

In this study, the researchers will aim to increase our awareness and gain

more knowledge about the point of view of first-year architecture students of

Columban College Baretto. This will help students and future researchers.

Research Design and Methodology

This chapter presents a description of the research design, research locale,

respondents of the study, research instrument, data gathering procedure and

statistical treatment of data.

Research Design

An online survey was administered to 50 first years architecture students

from Columban College Baretto. In order to gather the necessary data, the

researchers used a descriptive method. It includes techniques that are used to

summarize and describe numerical data for the purpose of easier interpretation

(Kazmier, 2004). It is an important tool for collecting and analyzing information

from selected individuals.

Respondents of the Study

The respondents of this study are the First Year College Students of

Columban College Baretto Architecture Department. The respondents composed of

fifty (50) students.

Research Locale

This study was conducted at Columban College- Barretto Olongapo since

the chosen respondents are the students of the school.

Research Instrument

The online survey was the main instrument in the gathering of data. The

survey was divided into two (2) parts. The first part gathers the profile of the

respondents and the second part are the questionnaire survey about the topic.

Data Gathering Instrument

In this research the researchers had used a questionnaire survey to collect

the data. The first step is preparing the questionnaires that will cover the statement

of the problem. Second, the researchers distributed the questionnaire through

online, to first year’s architecture students of Columban College Baretto. Lastly,

the questionnaires will be scored, tailed and tabulated and the data were collected

and analyzed by the researchers.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The data were subjected to the following statistical techniques to provide analysis:

1. Percentage (%). It was used to describe the present distribution of the profile

of the respondents in terms of sex. It was also used to describe the

percentage of every question.

Results

Out of the 50 architecture students who respond to our surveyed, 66.7% are

female and 33.3% are male.

55.6% of they are undecided about the course that they will pursue before

going in to college and 44.4% are decided.

There are 55.6% of students who chose Architecture as their first career

choice while 44.4% chose other courses.

Before they choose the course Architecture, there 60% of the students chose

other courses, such as:

 Engineering - 20%

 IT (Information Technology) - 15%

 Military - 5%

 Interior and Fashion Designer - 10%

88.9% of the students answered that going to Architecture school is their

choice, while 11.1% of students answered that it is not their choice to choose

Architecture course.
80% of the students said that choosing Architecture as their course is their

personal choice 12% of them said that they were inspired by their families, and 8%

said that because they did not pass the entrance examination of the first course they

have chosen.

85% of the students said that their family influences them to choose

Architecture course, while 10% said that they were inspired by the buildings they

saw and the Famous Architects they know. 5% of the students said that they just

influenced by themselves.

After they choose Architecture course, 100% of the students said that they

love and like choosing Architecture

Chapter IV

Interpretation and Analysis of Data

We conducted surveys from 50 architecture students as our correspondents

from Columban College, Inc. located in Rizal St., Barrio Barretto, Olongapo City;

66.7% are female and 33.3% are male and all first year students.

We learned that a lot of the students are still undecided or still troubling

about what they really want in college and course to choose, hence a great number

of the correspondents choose architecture as their first career.

However, before choosing architecture as their course they have been choosing

courses from Engineering, IT (information technology), Interior Designer and

Military.

We also learned that some of the correspondents are inspired by their

family, inspired by the buildings they are seeing and also inspired by just

themselves and some of the students just did not passed the exam for the course

they wanted to have that’s why they choose architecture.

However 100% of the correspondents after having architecture they learn to like it

and love it.

Review of Related Studies

Local

One of the primary arguments regarding factors influencing student’s choice

of college course is the effects of it to students’ performance and learning. The

subject matter is broadly and has been studied in search for the improvement

towards it. According to Alba et al. (2010), they find that one of the biggest

problems of a particular graduating high school student is to decide on what course

they will take in college. Accepting the fact that there are mere factors that affects

their decisions. The factor that affects the most with regards to college course

decision-making is the financial stability of the family. With this, the student finds

it complicated to decide whether to go for the course that he or she desires or to go

for the course that his or her family can afford. Students’ advantage that they have

to work with is their own skill.

The students have the potential to pursue their career because the skill they

have is appropriate for their course. Their skills are cultivated in their homes and as

well in their school.

The most precise possible solution that a student can do to get what they

want is to study hard. Finishing high school is a one-step ahead for them in
reaching their goals. In college, the students’ goal is to study harder for them to

graduate and to have a good job right after they graduate. 5. Nearly everyone, if

they do it, they landed at the same probable results: to have their own business or

work for a company. Students’ believe that they can do it. If they all have this

much enthusiasm to pursue their career, the researchers can conclude that all

students will be successful, thus, so will our country.

Foreign

According to Robert A. Seashore (1962) more than 15,000 typical young

people have problems about school. Surprisingly, most students approve

wholeheartedly of their schools. Despite a certain amount of groaning and

grumbling, 79 percent of those polled frankly admit that they like school. Only 6

percent dislike it so much that they would like to quit. Despite their general

approval, however, many young people complain that their problem does not know

how to study effectively. Big majorities mention problems that stand in the way of

getting the most out of school. Here are some of those problems: I would like to do

well I my school work, but I do not know how to study effectively; I could do

better if I had more definite idea of how well I’m doing during the semester; It is

the test that worry me. Even when I “know my stuff” I get so tense and worried

that I don’t do as well as I should; I know exactly what I want to say, but putting it

down on paper is what gets me. Students may have all their school problems neatly
solved, but maybe questions about their plans for the future are baffling them.

Perhaps they haven’t yet chosen the career they would like to follow. They may be

uncertain about their future educational plans. The researchers found this selection

precise since most of the youth today experience lack of self-esteem when it comes

to the fact that they are pressured to do well in college. Like what is mentioned

above, some students find it hard to come up with exams when they did not

understand the lesson. That is why some young people are discouraged to continue

up to their college degree because of their experiences in high school. For example,

freshmen students who are bullied in their high school days would become more

cautious in all aspects especially in choosing their friends and acquaintances.

Discussion

Many students find it difficult in choosing what course to take in college.

The pressure is always high and getting higher. Students tend to have a lot of

choices and choosing a course is really a hard decision to make. Your future

depends on it and the decision you will make would determine what life you will

have in the future. This is the first step in your life as an independent person and

this is the first step for your success. You should be careful in choosing a course

because when you have started on it there is no way getting back. So from the start

you should pick the right one and you should make up your mind that this is the

course for you and this will lead you to success.

The course Architecture is rough. It’s definitely not a profession for

everyone or more accurately everyone who thinks they should be an Architect. In

fact, architecture can be more of a lifestyle than just a job or a profession. It’s a

long way process to get a license, patience is a virtue and should come with

passion in every challenges that is worth pursuing. That’s why we conducted a

research on how the first year students of Columban College Architecture

Department choose their course. We asked them if their undecided taking

architecture course, if it’s their first choice or there other courses they have listed,

if it’s their choice, how did they end up in Bs. Architecture and who influence

them and if after Architecture course, did they learn to like it or love it. By these

questions the students can perceive and can be more aware in the path they are

taking.

Life is full of surprises. We’ll never know for certain what future will look

like. We’ll never know where it end up or what we’ll accomplish in the next few

years. We’ll never know who will befriend, what we will experience and how we

will feel that’s why life should be treated well in everyday as like choosing a

course. In Architecture there is always more we could do, things we could try, or

ways it could be better. College is a practice of challenges and one way to

overcome it is to enjoy it.

Recommendation

After the conclusions were drawn, the following recommendations were

posited:

A. Columban College first year students of Architecture Department. This

study will provide wide perception unto what are the factors in choosing

Architecture as their vocational course.

1. Ask yourself why you are studying. Are you studying to better yourself,

explore your interest, or to just get ahead in your career? The answer to this

could have a huge effect on the course you pick.

2. Focus on what’s important to you. It’s so easy to get carried away by what

your friends or family like in a course or some amazing statistics. Pick what

matters to you, and don’t be swayed by others.

3. Stay Motivated. When you're studying it helps to keep in mind your reasons

for doing all this hard work, like a course you're working towards. It can

help to have something in your study space to remind you of your goals.

B. Other Researchers. This study will help the community to solve the

existing problem which can further improve in choosing Architecture as

vocational course.
1. Gather more related theories, literature and studies to help support your

study.

2. Be patient in gathering data and information from the trusted sites, not

ending with .com.
