2.5. Which level of the following innovation cycle fit your project /idea?
(What is the stage of development of your research?)

☐ Basic research

 2.6. What are the applications of this intellectual property or your product /
research results?

The prickly pear seed oil is gaining such popularity in the cosmetics and food
industries. With large amounts of linoleic acid, Vitamin E, phytosterols, and
polyphenols, prickly pear seed oil stimulates healthy cell production and turnover,
provides protection, and helps skin retain moisture. These components make the oil
an extremely rich and skin-nourishing oil. It soothes, hydrates, and reduces
inflammation that can damage collagen, and it can prevent skin aging and wrinkles.

2
 2.7. How is this Intellectual Property or your product / research results different
from existing technology?

This oil has a higher effect than any other natural oil such as Argan oil which is
originally imported from Morocco and also higher value in the cosmetic industry.
The production cost and the fruit price is relatively low to the global market which
can help Egypt be a leader in this oil production.

 2.8. Why is this Intellectual Property or your product / research results better than
existing technology?

The analyses of the seeds oil of this fruit showed the highest content of
Linoleic fatty acid, more than any other natural plant or fruit, including Argan Oil.

The high content of Linoleic acid puts Prickly pear seed oil on top of the anti-aging
oils. The high moisturizing proprieties are unique, consequently, will improve the
skin elasticity and reduce the skin wrinkles.

This precious oil is highly concentrated in Vitamin E, and the analyses show about
62% content of Linoleic fatty acid, more than Argan Oil (35%). it also contains 21% of
the Oleic fatty acid and 14% of Palmitic acid.

1. Objectives, Relation to call and topic & Concept and methodology

1.1 Objectives

The objective is to set to a system that ensure quality and process the quantity of
prickly pear seed oil sufficient to meet demand at a daily average and to get the by-
products (i.e. juice, jam and other products) with good standards

This process will give an excellent added value to an underrated fruit and its use in
Egypt.

The project will start with fruit stock in cold chamber due to the end of the season
and the ordering of the production line.
After three months, the production line will be ready and start training and
prototyping and optimize the process.

4
1.2 Relation to call and topic

a- As stated before, this project will give an added value to an agriculture

product that have been neglected over the years giving a very important
product to the cosmetic industry and the food sector and which can be
exported globally.

b- There are only two concerns that will require special planning:

1- Seasonal: The prickly pear is a seasonal fruit so we will have to stock

during the season and increase our productivity to obtain an average
quantity which can meet demand all year long.
2- Price inflation: The fruit price will start to increase with the beginning of
the second year as the farmers will know its importance and competition.
Which will can be solved in the future by growing our own product and
gain control over quality and being independent especially that prickly
pear doesn’t require special needs to grow.

1.3 Concept and methodology

(a) Concept
• I have been researching for over a year the market demand of natural
products, which is increasing lately.

• These natural products proved to be effective with less side effects on

human health. Prickly pear demand is also in the rise as cosmetic
manufacturers are using it more and more.

(b) Methodology
• As a production engineer and natural oil supplier, I designed this process to
be simple and cost effective delivering the required products:

5
2. Innovation & Impact

2.1 Innovation

• The use of basic equipment and available resources at our reach to produce
a top notch oil with good standards from a widely produce fruit is the
innovative part.
And also the use of its by-products as pulp (Juice or jam) and the peel as
animal food or for fermicompost growers creating almost a zero waste
process.

2.3 Outcomes & expected impacts

Outcomes:
- High value oil (around usd 500/liter)
- Zero waste
- Exporting

Part D: Proposed Business Model (Two pages)

 Mini business model (Marketing channels, cost & profit structure)

Prickly pear seed oil can be found mostly in Morocco and south American countries.
This oil doesn’t have a fixed price in the market that’s why sometimes you can found
just 1L of prickly pear seed oil cost from 500-1000 Euros in the international market.
Not to mention that 40 kilos of seeds gives you 1L of oil which if obtained from
around 1 ton of prickly pear fruits.
Everyday Cosmetics companies around the world use this oil to make beauty
products, that’s why they search for a supplier to satisfy their needs. In recent years
we saw a grow in the prickly pear oil market which mean that every company is
looking to grown its revenue and take a bigger piece of the market share.

Average Daily Production:

“3 tons to get 3 liters”

3 tons x EGP 4000 = EGP 12 000 /Daily

Giving us 3 liters of oil Daily x EUR 500 = EUR 1 500 = EGP 27 000/Daily

(27 000 – 12 000) x 24 days = EGP 360 000

Running (Operational) Cost = EGP 45 000

REVENUE EGP 315 000

Deducting the Initial (Direct cost EGP 720 000/12 months) = EGP 60
000/MONTHLY

Revenue – Direct monthly cost = EGP 255 000
