I n t e r m e d i a t e a c q u i s i t i o n o c c u r s when p i t c h and yaw e r r o r s a r e
reduced below 1 0 d e g r e e s . During i n t e r m e d i a t e a c q u i s i t i o n (and
f i n e a c q u i s i t i o n ) a r o l l p o s i t i o n loop i s u s e d t o p r o v i d e t h e
d e s i r e d f i n a l a t t i t u d e of t h e payload.
I n t e r m e d i a t e and f i n e a c q u i s i t i o n d i f f e r o n l y i n t h e maximum
t h r u s t v a l u e from t h e r o l l t h r u s t e r s . High t h r u s t v a l v e s are
u t i l i z e d d u r i n g i n t e r m e d i a t e a c q u i s i t i o n t o q u i c k l y ( a b o u t 4 sec-

and e x h a u s t e d t h r o u g h t h e vortex v a l v e s i n t h e FPT t o p r e v e n t
g e n e r a t i o n of random t h r u s t s which would r e s u l t i f t h e v e n t f l o w
were s i m p l y dumped overboard. Typical supply p r e s s u r e s f o r the

3. F l u i d i c i m p l e m e n t a t i o n of t h e d e s p i n c o n t r o l i s p r a c t i c a l
and p r o v i d e s t h e needed performance. The combination
of a f l u i d i c r a t e s e n s o r and d e s p i n c o n t r o l v a l v e c o u l d
b e packaged as an i n t e g r a l u n i t which can be s i m p l y
i n t e r f a c e d w i t h t h e e x i s t i n g SPARCS c o n t r o l system.
The f l u i d i c d e s p i n c o n t r o l i s a t t r a c t i v e s i n c e i t
e l i m i n a t e s r e l a t i v e l y complex e l e c t r o n i c computation
f o r computing r o l l r a t e s d u r i n g d e s p i n . Because of t h e
s i m p l i c i t y of i n t e r f a c i n g and t h e i n t e g r a t e d s e n s o r / v a l v e
d e s i g n , t h e d e s p i n c o n t r o l c o u l d be e a s i l y and
e c o n o m i c a l l y phased i n t o t h e c u r r e n t SPARCS package.
4. F l u i d i c i m p l e m e n t a t i o n of t h e r o l l - r a t e c o n t r o l a l s o i s
p r a c t i c a l and can p r o v i d e t h e needed performance. U s e
of t h e f l u i d i c c o n t r o l a g a i n would e l i m i n a t e t h e complex
e l e c t r o n i c computation of r o l l r a t e from t h e magnetometer
s i g n a l s . The power Freon consumption would be a s m a l l
( l e s s t h a n 6 % ) compared t o t h a t needed f o r t h e t o t a l
m i s s i o n and t h e c o n t r o l c i r c u i t r y c o u l d be e a s i l y i n t e r -
faced w i t h t h e present-design f l u i d i c proportional
thruster.

2.0 DESPIN CONTROL
The f u n c t i o n of t h e d e s p i n c o n t r o l i s t o d e c r e a s e l a r g e , i n i t i a l
r o l l r a t e s t o a v a l u e n e a r z e r o . F i g u r e 3 i s a c i r c u i t diagram o f
t h e control. The v o r t e x r a t e s e n s o r and two a m p l i f i e r s r e c e i v e
s u p p l y p r e s s u r e from an e l e c t r i c a l l y - o p e r a t e d s o l e n o i d v a l v e . The
r a t e s e n s o r , a m p l i f i e r s and a p n e u m a t i c a l l y - o p e r a t e d n o r m a l l y - c l o s e d
l a t c h i n g - r e l a y are e n c l o s e d i n a p r e s s u r e v e s s e l which i s i n i t i a l l y
m a i n t a i n e d by means of o r i f i c e "A" and p r o p e r l y s i z e d f l u i d i c
components a t a b o u t 2 5 0 0 p s i f o r a s u p p l y p r e s s u r e of 5 0 0 0 p s i .
The p r e s s u r e r a t i o a c r o s s t h e s e n s o r and a m p l i f i e r s t h u s i s main-
t a i n e d a t about 2 t o avoid supersonic pressure r a t i o s across t h e
f l u i d i c elements.
The r a t e s e n s o r i s g e o m e t r i c a l l y b i a s e d by r o t a t i n g t h e s e n s o r
probe s o t h a t t h e o u t p u t g o e s t h r o u g h z e r o a t a r a t e of t e n d e g r e e s
p e r second as shown i n F i g u r e 4. Thus a t z e r o r o l l - r a t e t h e r a t e -
s e n s o r o u t p u t p o l a r i t y i s o p p o s i t e t h e p o l a r i t y e x i s t i n g when t h e
vehicle is i n i t i a l l y rolling.
The vortex rate-sensor o u t p u t i s a m p l i f i e d by t h e f i r s t o f t h e two
a m p l i f i e r s f o l l o w i n g t h e s e n s o r ( F i g u r e 3 1 , T h e o u t p u t of t h i s
a m p l i f i e r i s a p p l i e d t o one c o n t r o l p o r t of a m p l i f i e r 2 and t h e
o u t p u t of a m p l i f i e r 2 d r i v e s t h e b e l l o w s a c t u a t e d l a t c h i n g t o g g l e
switch.
I n o p e r a t i o n h i g h i n i t i a l r o l l r a t e s p r o v i d e a l a r g e p o s i t i v e AP
o u t p u t from t h e v o r t e x r a t e s e n s o r . T h i s p o l a r i t y s i g n a l a p p l i e d
t o amplifier 2 a i d s the b i a s r e s i s t o r i n maintaining amplifier 2
o u t p u t s a t u r a t e d i n t h e "+'I p o l a r i t y and t h e o u t p u t i s s i m p l y v e n t e d .
I n t h i s s t a t e p r e s s u r e i s a p p l i e d t o t h e d e s p i n t h r u s t e r s t o decrease
r o l l r a t e . A s r o l l r a t e p a s s e s t h r o u g h 3.0 d e g / s e c t h e o u t p u t p o l a r -
i t y from t h e r a t e s e n s o r r e v e r s e s and, as t h e r o l l r a t e a p p r o a c h e s
z e r o , s i g n a l p r e s s u r e P 1 a t a m p l i f i e r 2 i s l a r g e r t h a n bias p r e s s u r e

p r e v e n t s t h e p o s s i b i l i t y of f a l s e s i g n a l s when t h e s u p p l y p r e s s u r e
i s f i r s t t u r n e d on. (The r a t e s e n s o r h a s a f i n i t e f i l l t i m e and
for a s h o r t p e r i o d of t i m e w i l l have z e r o o u t p u t even though it i s
rotating,)
T h e d e s p i n c o n t r o l i s o p e r a t e d u n r e g u l a t e d from t h e main s u p p l y of
F r e o n 14 and s u p p l y p r e s s u r e w i l l d r o p d u r i n g i t s o p e r a t i o n . Mod-
e r a t e s u p p l y p r e s s u r e changes w i l l have l i t t l e a f f e c t an d e s p i n
control operation since a l l t h e f l u i d i c devices including t h e bias
r e s i s t o r o p e r a t e t u r b u l e n t ; i , e . t h e y w i l l obey s q u a r e l a w p r e s s u r e /
f l o w r e l a t i o n s h i p s and t h u s p r e s s u r e r a t i o s s h o u l d remain n e a r l y

The v o r t e x r a t e s e n s o r i s t h e l a r g e s t of t h e f l u i d i c components.
A commercially a v a i l a b l e u n i t o c c u p i e s a s p a c e e n v e l o p e which i s
6.125 i n c h e s i n d i a m e t e r by 1.875 i n c h e s h i g h . It i s constructed
from aluminum and weighs t w o pounds. The f l u i d i c a m p l i f i e r s
employed would have a power n o z z l e cross s e c t i o n of . 0 2 x . 0 2 i n .
R e s t r i c t o r A must have an area r o u g h l y o n e - h a l f t h e e q u i v a l e n t
t h r o a t area of t h e d e s p i n n o z z l e s . Two n o z z l e s w i t h a . 0 6 7 i n c h
t h r o a t diameter produce t h e despin couple. I f orifice A w e r e sized
a t . 0 6 7 i n c h d i a m e t e r , t h e n i t s area would b e h a l f t h e t o t a l n o z z l e
t h r o a t area. I n a d d i t i o n , though, a d i s c h a r g e c o e f f i c i e n t i n t h e
neighborhood of 0 . 7 s h o u l d b e assumed t o a p p l y t o o r i f i c e A. The

The d e s p i n c o n t r o l i s a t t r a c t i v e b e c a u s e it e l i m i n a t e s t h e
n e c e s s i t y f o r e l e c t r o n i c a l l y computing r o l l - r a t e from e l e c t r i c a l
magnetometers and sun s e n s o r s . The e l i m i n a t i o n of t h e e l e c t r i c a l
r o l l rate c i r c u i t r y could r e s u l t i n about a 20% r e d u c t i c n i n
e l e c t r o n i c s . Before e l i m i n a t i n g t h e e l e c t r o n i c r o l l - r a t e c i r c u i t r y
some means must b e d e v i s e d f o r c o r r e c t l y i n t e r p r e t i n g t h e magneto-
m e t e r sinusoidal output. For example, t h e s i n e of a r o l l a n g l e
between -90 and +90 d e g r e e h a s p o s i t i v e s l o p e , b u t t h e s l o p e i s
n e g a t i v e i n t h e o t h e r two r o l l a n g l e q u a d r a n t s . A r o l l r a t e
computation w i l l t a k e on a p o l a r i t y which depends on t h e s l o p e of
t h e s i n e . T h e r e f o r e , a p o s i t i o n c o n t r o l which i s r a t e damped and
d e r i v e s a l l p o s i t i o n and r a t e i n f o r m a t i o n from a magnetometer
s i n u s o i d a l o u t p u t a l o n e can o n l y b e s t a b x e i n two o f t h e f o u r r o l l -
a n g l e q u a d r a n t s . F u r t h e r e f f o r t i s needed t o r e s o l v e t h i s
deficiency.

3,O COARSE A C Q U I S I T I O N (Roll R a t e C o n t r o l )
The SPARCS c o a r s e a c q u i s i t i o n i s t h e c o n t r o l p h a s e d u r i n g w h i c h
l a r g e p i t c h and yaw e r r o r s a r e r e d u c e d t o a s m a l l v a l u e ( l e s s t h a n
t e n d e g r e e s ) . During coarse a c q u i s i t i o n r o l l r a t e i s h e l d as close
t o z e r o as i s p o s s i b l e . T h i s r e s u l t s i n t h e d e c o u p l i n g of t h e
p i t c h and yaw c o n t r o l p o s i t i o n l o o p s which s i m p l i f i e s t h e c o n t r o l
problem
F i g u r e 5 shows t h e r o l l r a t e c o n t r o l i m p l e m e n t a t i o n , The l o o p i s
s e t up t o command a z e r o r o l l r a t e . T h e moment a r m and vehicle
moment of i n e r t i a are t y p i c a l of t h o s e f o r SPARCS i n s e r t s launched
by Aerobee 1 5 0 sounding r o c k e t s . The f l u i d i c p r o p o r t i o n a l t h r u s t e r
(FPT) i s s i m i l a r t o one b e i n g - b u i l t f o r NASA/ARC under c o n t r a c t
NAS 2-5466 w i t h t h e e x c e p t i o n t h a t t h e i n p u t command i s a d i f f e r -
e n t i a l p r e s s u r e i n s t e a d of a voltage. The v o r t e x r a t e s e n s o r i s
t h e s a m e one c o n s i d e r e d i n S e c t i o n 2 . 0 f o r d e s p i n c o n t r o l .
The v o r t e x r a t e s e n s o r scale f a c t o r a p p l i e s t o o p e r a t i o n on F r e o n
1 4 and i s a b o u t a f a c t o r of t h r e e g r e a t e r t h a n f o r a i r o p e r a t i o n
s i n c e Freon d e n s i t y i s t h r e e t i m e s t h a t of a i r . The o p e r a t i o n a l
a m p l i f i e r c l o s e d - l o o p g a i n of 2 0 . 6 i s a r e a s o n a b l e v a l u e t o
implement, and i t i s l o w enough t o p r e v e n t t h e a m p l i f i e r from
being too susceptible t o n u l l o f f s e t s a t t h e input.

The f l u i d i c e l e m e n t s r e q u i r e d f o r r o l l r a t e c o n t r o l are t h e v o r t e x

t h e power f o r r o l l , p i t c h and yaw c o n t r o l d u r i n g coarse, i n t e r m e d i a t e
and f i n e a c q u i s i t i o n s . I t s s i z e s h o u l d n o t be c h a r g e d a g a i n s t t h e
r o l l - r a t e c o n t r o l p o r t i o n of coarse a c q u i s i t i o n b e c a u s e i t must
m e e t r e q u i r e m e n t s which a r e i n d e p e n d e n t of c o n t r o l s i g n a l implemen-
t a t i o n ( i e , e ef l u i d i c o r e l e c t r o n i c ) The v o r t e x r a t e s e n s o r i s t h e
same as t h a t used f o r d e s p i n ( S e c t i o n 2 . 0 ) . Therefore, t h e only
additional f l u i d i c device required for r o l l rate control i s t h e

4.1 Magnetometer
The function of the fluidic magnetometer is to deliver a differen-
tial output pressure signal which is proportional to the angle the
magnetometer makes with the earth's magnetic field. It differs
from the conventional magnetometer by delivering a pneumatic output
instead of an electrical output.
The estimated package size is 1.7 inches long by 1 inch wide and
3/4 inches high; the weight is 0.1 lb, The assembly requires a
supply air flow of 4 x l o 4 lbm/sec for a 5 psig supply pressure.

The primary source of noise in the magnetometer is in the jet pipe
and the fluidic compensation. The spectral density of this noise
was estimated from previous noise 'tests at'G.E. Using standard
control techniques these noise sources can'be combined and moved
outside the magnetometer loop. The resulting 'spectral density has

control laop whose low pass bandwidth is 1 Hz, then the rms
