Module 10: Safety and Health at Work

As what I have learned, there are laws and organizations that managed or handle matters
regarding Safety and Health of a worker in their workplace. OSHA or the Occupational
Safety and Health Act was passed in 1970 to ensure safe and healthy work conditions for
workers both men and women. Emergency Planning and Community Right to Know Act
(EPCRA) or simply the Right to Know laws is also one of the laws passed to protect the welfare
of workers. This law requires the government both local and state to have an emergency response
plan in response to chemical emergencies.

In the lesson 2, Health Hazards at work is discussed. This module mainly tackles about Stress.
Positive Stress is called Eustress and Negative Stress is called Distress. Positive Stress (Eustress)
is the one that gives us the dedication to finish our task or reach our goals. While Negative stress
(Distress) make us tardy, less focus and slack in our work. There are also two types of stress that
is based on its duration. Acute stress is the stress that happens in a short period of time while the
Chronic stress stays in a long time. Hyperstress is the kind of stresses that is kept or has been
having for a long period of time and Hypostress is the stress that caused by lack of eustress or
motivators. This type of stress is caused by the feeling or thought of being tired and has no rest.

Causes of stress in workplace are also discussed. Violence and Bullying are some of the
examples. On the other hand, the Effects of this stress are also mentioned. Examples are CTD or
the Cumulative trauma disorder and the Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) or Environmental
Illness (EI).
