Course Description
This course provides the students a background of Social Studies as a learning area in the Basic Education Curriculum. Discussions focus on
the nature, structure, goals, content, and competencies of Araling Panlipunan (Social Studies) as a core subject of the K to 12 Curriculum.

It also exposes students to innovative approaches, methods, and strategies in teaching and learning Social Studies that promote dynamic
interactive learning experiences. The course provides varied opportunities for students to engage in systematic planning of instruction, preparation of
instructional materials, and development of assessment tools based on learning objectives and content.

The course develops the students’ skills in designing Social Studies instruction that fits the requirements of the K to 12 Curriculum, thus
making it a more meaningful and engaging subject. Students’ demonstration teaching serves as culminating activity of this course.

General Objectives
At the end of the course, the students are expected to:
A. Cognitive
1. familiarize with the nature of Social Studies as a field of Social Science and as a subject in the Philippine Basic Education Curriculum;
2. apply the concepts learned from other professional courses such as Principles of Teaching, Assessment of Learning, Facilitating Learning,
Educational Technology, and Curriculum Development, in choosing and utilizing teaching methods in Social Studies; and
3. analyze varied teaching-learning situations as bases in designing instruction.

B. Affective
1. recognize the value and importance of Social Studies as a subject in the Philippine Basic Education Curriculum;
2. advance commitment and passion to the teaching profession;
3. speak positive about the role of Social Studies teachers in developing responsible individuals, and in shaping the nation; and
4. display expected positive behavior such as creativity, diligence, responsibility, and honesty in performing assigned tasks.

C. Psychomotor
1. design instructional activities in Social Studies using varied emerging models;
2. prepare sample semi-detailed learning plan, teaching materials, and measurement tools in Social Studies; and
3. perform demonstration teaching using the prepared learning plan.
