The Good, The Bad And The Ugly

The Good
1. Roscoe Rutter

Here is a website based on photography, videos, design and illustration. Initially I felt drawn in by the
first web page, it’s very neat and the images are places well, big enough to see and three per row
isn’t too overwhelming, the photo’s chosen are also quite striking images already giving a clear
representation of the work they achieve and nothing distracting in the background.

Navigating around the page is simple, the bar at the top clearly shows headings on what you
can find on the site and are easily clickable. The text throughout is very easily readable and
consistent over the website. Subheadings are there to also help the viewer know what each
section is about. Each project they have worked on is clearly named with an image for each
one.

Clear contact details and links to social media pages.

2. Fine Art Prints (gavinwallacephotography.co.uk)

Another website I looked into was by a photographer Gavin Wallace, again he has displayed his
work on the main page so viewers can instantly see what his photography is about and it is
presented professionally.

He has a section on types of portraiture he does such as, environmental, studio and
documentary so the viewer can head straight to their point of interest.

Gavin has provided a section on certain projects he has done, again easily seen and accessible,
he also has client testimonials so you can see he is valued by his customers and see their
feedback.

Gavin has a shopping basket icon if people decide to order from him and also clickable links to
his Instagram page etc.

His images on the website can be enlarged with one click and are high quality images.
The Bad
1. Wedding Photographer Bristol - Bristol Contemporary Photography

This website is mainly based on wedding photography but she also works on maternity and
portraits but her page pushes much more towards wedding so it makes me feel as if she
should possibly have more of a separation on the site for these individual works. I am
finding some images are poor and out of focus and she has so many so limiting this down to
only the best ones would be much better. The site seems very slow, when I clicked on a
subheading it took a while to load unlike the previous websites.

I feel there is too much information on every page, she has info to the left, the centre and
the right, the headings on the left are big and distracting so maybe along the top would
have worked better. On one page her models heads have been cut off the photo which I feel
is unprofessional. Her bio gives off so much information about herself and for me I think it is
far too much and not necessary.

2. Landscape and nature photographer in Yorkshire, workshops, prints and commercial

photography - Lizzie Shepherd Photography

With this website by Lizzie I instantly noticed her website name was her name which is okay
but it says nothing about photography in so people could skip pass this not knowing it is
anything photography based. I would have liked to see some info on the homepage
explaining what her site is about but it just flicks through a few images of hers. She has
discounts being put out there lasting until christmas which to me I feel she is selling herself
cheap to put an offer out for that period of time, almost stating she isn’t getting much work.
Her bio is very extensive and long which again I feel is too much, I think a decent
paragraph saying a little about yourself is enough to keep the viewer occupied but
paragraphs and paragraphs long feels too much. There doesn’t seem to be a
shopping basket option for her prints and contacting her isn’t so simple, it’s a case of
filling out details which in this day and age people want quick access to an email etc,
also no sign of Instagram or Facebook pages either.

The Ugly
1. Photography for all your needs. Family portraits, children, pets, passports, The Fairy
Experience, Wedding Photography, events, photobooth, commercial, products, Proms
(photographybyus.co.uk)

Firstly I personally am not keen on the name “photography by us” it reminds me of toys r us
and gives me a completely different take on what they are actually about. Throughout the
whole site I have noticed that the font is inconsistent and they have used many different
styles of font which looks completely unprofessional and doesn’t allow the page to flow
smoothly. There are images on her that are so small you can barely make them out and
can’t even enlarge them so seems useless them being there at all.

It states some information on booking a session and straight away talks about
needing a deposit which stating the deposit is necessary but right at the start
would be off putting to the client. I t also says to go to the prices and fees page
which I have been unable to find so it isn’t very clear at all. I feel the colours are
too white and the page needs some sort of theme to it even if it is simplistic.

2. A J Photography: Contact (ajphotographyhampshire.co.uk)

This website is instantly off putting to me with the red background, I don’t feel it gives credit
to his images as it’s too distracting and the orange font blends in with it too much, not a
great colour match in my opinion. Lots of empty space not being used, the images could
have filled this and means you would see them enlarged too. Hardly any information on this
site and a way of contact is to request a brochure which I find confusing. The images are
sized differently on the page which gives it inconsistency, there are two options to click into
each genre of photography which is unnecessary. This photographer seems to be a jack of
all trades and I would find it hard to distinguish a usp. The font is also inconsistent as from
page to page it varies in size and style.
