Abstract

Poaching being one of the burning issue of CNP has not been controlled yet. Despite a relative successful
conservation program for endangered species in NPs, poaching has remain as on the major threats to
survival. In the recent years, there has been an alarming rise in the numbers of animals poached such as
100 rhinos were taken in and around CNP.

Although poaching level is influenced by the price on the international market, there have not been any
attempts to study the serious reason behind poaching. This study however helps to know the factors
that are thought to influence the numbers of animals poached in CNP within five consecutive years
which includes:

Animal population, effectiveness for poaching, price of animal, opportunities of alternative economy.

Thus the result indicates that there are different antipoacching units in CNP, in their original
organizational and operational form which were highly successful in controlling the level of poaching
in CNP. Although, this analysis being very simplistic, it provides valuable insights in to the factors that
have affected the level of poaching in CNP over years and also encourage the APU’s to contribute in the
conservation and protection of wild animals as well as for reduction of poaching activities. Thus all this
factors will be helpful in formulating effective policies to tackle the poaching activities especially in and
around the CNP where Nepals largest one horned rhinoceros and other endangered animals are found.
