First Quarter – Lesson 2: Managing server role

Description:

The lesson teaches how to configure server function. Server modules and add-ons.
Network services and its operation.

Content Standard:

The learners demonstrate an understanding of concepts and principles in setting up computer


servers.

Performance Standard:

The learners shall be able to set up computer servers based on acceptable standards and
hardware.

Learning Competencies

The individual can learn to check normal server function in accordance with
manufacturer’s instructions. Install and update required modules/add-ons on NOS installation
procedures. Confirm network services based on user/system requirements. Check operation of
network services based on user/system requirements. Respond to unplanned events or conditions
in accordance with established procedures

Introduction

To set-up server, start by setting up the roles of the server. To have an overview of the status of
the server, perform top management task, and add or remove server roles and features.

To start configuration. Click start button, select administrative tools, server manager.

Server manager shows server summary installed in the server. Gives an overview of the status of
the server, perform too management tasks, and add or remove server role and features.

Roles summary. Shows the


installed roles in the current server.

Roles: 0 of 17 installed.

To start adding roles. Start by using dcpromo.

To open dcpromo. Go to start >


dcpromo>press Enter.

Active directory domain services (ADDS) installation.

Active Directory Domain Services role are


being installed in this process, after the process
is done Wizard will open automatically.

Installation Wizard appears, then press Next.

This wizard helps you install Active


Directory Domain Services (AD DS).

Operating System Compatibility


prompts, then press Next.

Choose a Deployment Configuration.

- Existing Forest
- Create a new domain in a new forest

Having a fresh operating system requires


to create a new domain. Press Next.

Name the Forest Root Domain

Put in FQDN of the forest root domain as


shown in the figure. Example
ascobschool.net, then press Next.

Set Forest
Functional Level. 4

Select Windows

Select Windows Server 2008 for Forest


Functional Level then press Next.

server role. Then press Next.

Static IP Assignment

Wizard will prompt to an option assigning static


IP Address. Select Yes, the computer will use
dynamically assigned IP for recommended
action.

Press Yes.

Location for Database, Log Files and SYSVOL will prompt. No changes is required for all
location, then Press Next.

Setup Directory Restore Mode Administrative Password. Input password with the
combination of number, letters and special character. Press Next.

Summary of your
selections has been
preview. Press Next.

Wait for the process to finish. Then
reboot computer.

A reboot is required for the (AD DS), DNS roles to be installed successfully.

After the computer has been


booted, AD DS and DNS roles has
been installed, Welcome screen will
ask for Password of the Domain
you have created in your
installation.

To check the roles you have installed. Go to Start> Administrative >Server Manager.

Roles 2 of 17 has been installed with
Yellow indication.

Direct Host Control Protocol Installation.

To install Direct Host Control Protocol


(DHCP) role, from Server Manager, Select
Add Roles.

Press Next.

Selection of Roles will be shown.

Select Direct Host Control Protocol


(DHCP) Server

Then Press Next.

Add Roles Wizard Prompt will appear. Then Select Install DHCP Server anyway (Not
recommended) Press Next.

Introduction to DHCP Server

The Dynamic Host Configuration


Protocol allows servers to assign, or
lease, IP address to computers and other
devices that are enabled as DHCP
clients.

Deploying a DHCP server on the


network provides computer and other
TCP/IP-based network devices with
valid IP address and the additional
configuration

Parameters these devices need, called DHCP options. This allows computers and devices to
connect to other network resources, such as DNS servers, WINS servers, and routers.

Specifying IPv4 Server Settings.

Validate the Preferred DNS Server IPv4 address given by default. Press Next.

Add or Edit DHCP Scopes

A scope is the range of possible IP


addresses for a network. The DHCP
server cannot distribute IP addresses to
clients until a scope is created.

File Services Role Installation

To install File Services Role, go toe


Server Manager, Select Add Roles.

Select File Services by


checking the check box.

Then Press Next.

File Services provides technologies that help manage storage, enable file replication,
manage shared folders, ensure fast file searching, and enable access for UNIX client computers.
With File Services, organization ca store files in a central location and then share them with
users across the company network. You can index these shared files to help users find files
quickly. In addition, you can synchronize folders on multiple servers to provide fault-tolerant
access to shared resources. File Services also enables you to provision storage on Fibre Channel
and iSCSI disk storage subsystems.

Press Install, after the process, installation succeeded. Select Close.

A domain user account enables the service to take full advantage of the service security
features of Windows and Microsoft Active Directory Domain Services. The service has whatever
local and network access is granted to the account, or to any groups of which the account is a
member.

Add User Account from Active Directory.
