FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION:
A Pulse Amplifier Card (SNAT 630 PAC) has the amplifier circuits for the two GTO’s
associated with one phase of the output. A shared logic circuit produces gate control
pulses for both GTO’s and ensures that the two devices associated with a single
output phase are not gated on simultaneously. A GTO inverter unit requires three
Pulse Amplifier Cards.

REASONS FOR THE CHANGE:

The energy of the amplifier circuits is charged into the electrolytic capacitors. The
electrolytic capacitor is an ageing component. The estimated lifetime of the capacitor
is about 10 years. Our recommendation is to change Pulse Amplifier Cards every 7
years to avoid the risk of destroying the GTO components from weak pulses caused
by increased ESR values. Another reason for the change is the increased leakage
current and offset voltage of optocouplers.

THE RESULTING EFFECT:

New capacitor:C=432 mikro F, ESR= 103 milliohm Old capacitor:C=297 mikro F, ESR= 3337 milliohm

New capacitor:C=6000 mikro F, ESR= 30 milliohm Old capacitor:C=5800 mikro F, ESR= 500 milliohm
