PRAYER

⇒Prayer is communicating with God; talking to


and listening to our Creator.
⇒Prayer is the raising of our hearts and minds
to God. Prayer should always be respectful.

•Prayer groups
•Retreats
⇒Private or Personal prayer is prayer
said alone
•Reading scripture
•Memorized prayers
•Personal; like a “conversation”
•Meditation
•Rosary – can be private or communal
The four Purposes of Prayer

Petition – asking God to fulfill our needs


(supplication)

Adoration – praise; showing love for God and His


creation

Contrition – showing sorrow or regret for sin and


asking for forgiveness

Thanksgiving – showing gratitude for blessings

TERMS:
1. Adoration – great love for someone; to adore is
to show great love

2. Amen – “it is so” a word said at the end of a


prayer to express agreement

3. Benediction – the blessing of the congregation


with the Host

4. Catholic – “universal” including or concerning all


humankind
5. Contrition – regret for sin or wrongdoing;
contrite means sorry

6. Creed – a formal statement of belief; a


prayer that states what a person believes.

7. Divine – of, about, or from God


8. Divine Praises – a litany of prayers of adoration
said after Benediction

9. Intercession – a prayer or petition to God on


behalf of another

10. Genuflect – to bend on one knee in reverence; a


sign of great respect and worship before the
Blessed Sacrament

11. Grace – a share of God’s love within us; divine


love and protection
12. Hymn – a song of praise and honor to God

13. Litany – a list or series of blessings or titles


which invoke or give praise

14. Novena – a nine-day period of prayer and


devotion

15. Petition – a formal request


PRAYER IN THE BIBLE
The Lord’s Prayer – Commonly called the
Our Father; this is the prayer that Jesus taught
His disciples. The Lord’s Prayer is found in
Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke 11:2-4
The Magnificat – Mary’s prayer of adoration.
Mary proclaims this prayer after the Angel
Gabriel visits her. This is found in Luke 1:46-
55.
Psalms – Poetic songs of praise in the Book of
Psalms, in the Old Testament. Tradition tells
us that most of the Psalms were written by
King David.
The Sign of the Cross expresses three chief
mysteries of our faith:

⇒The Blessed Trinity – The mystery of


three divine Persons in One God

⇒The Incarnation – The mystery of God


becoming human; the “Word made flesh”

⇒Redemption – the mystery by which


Jesus’ sacrifice and Resurrection saves us
from sin
