Better known for engines, FPT Industrial develops extensive line of axles
and transmissions for on- and off-road applications

Industrial? Many would say earthmoving machines,
agricultural vehicles and trucks. And if it were “FPT In-
dustrial,” the most likely answer would be “engines.”
But “engines” would only be a partial answer when it comes
to FPT Industrial. A brand of CNH Industrial, FPT Industrial
is very widely known for its range of commercial vehicle, off-
highway, generator set and marine engines. The company
produces more than a half-million engines each year, be-
tween what it supplies to sister companies CNH Industrial
and Iveco and engines it sells on the open market.
But what’s not quite as widely known is FPT Industrial’s
expertise and capability in other drivetrain technologies,
specifically axles and transmissions.
The history of FPT Industrial’s drivetrain products dates
back to the 1970s when Iveco incorporated several indus-
trial vehicle and components companies. In 1989 the com-
pany founded Torino Driveline, which brought together all
drivetrain competencies and since then, the company has
worked towards the continued improvement of its axle and
transmission lineup.
Today FPT Industrial produces a range of six-speed man-
ual transmissions for light commercial vehicles, composed
of three families all equipped with power take-offs (PTOs) Along with its engines, FPT Industrial produces

FPT Industrial is very much focused on total in-house devel-

which for axles include bevel gear sets — either spiral or hyp-

er and Turin Engine plant manager, said that FPT Industrial’s
drivetrain components are manufactured in two facilities in
Turin, Italy, one dedicated to transmissions, the other to axles.
“The two plants employ about 1000 people and one of
our greatest advantages is that manufacturing is in the same
location as R&D and testing,” Catania said. “Investments FPT Industrial also manufactures a full range of front

company said.
The new Tourismo RHD buses mount as standard a six-
speed Mercedes-Benz manual transmission managed with
a joystick lever in the cockpit. As an option, Mercedes-Benz
offers the fully automated eight-speed Mercedes-Benz GO
250-8 PowerShift transmission, available for all engine rat-

transmission is controlled in the Tourismo for the first time
via a space-saving and intuitively-operated steering column
switch, Mercedes-Benz said. Manual intervention during
driving is not normally necessary, the company said, which
means that the driver can keep both hands on the wheel. The
system has been used in other Mercedes-Benz vehicles.
For the right-hand-drive vehicles, Mercedes-Benz has
taken a different approach, since operators in such coun-
tries tend to prefer automatic transmissions. Thus the

Experts at Mercedes-Benz have calculated that with an an-
nual mileage of 100 000 km, the savings add up to around
1500 to 2000 L of fuel or about three full fuel tanks.
According to Mercedes-Benz, further fuel consumption
improvements — and thus emissions reductions — can
be obtained with new optional equipment items such
as Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC) or Eco Driver
Feedback (EDF).
PPC is an anticipatory cruise control system that ac-
cesses the topographical data of virtually 100% of the mo-
torways, trunk and main roads in Europe. Via GPS, PPC
can detect the current position of the coach and the route
ahead with its height profile. The system is designed to not
only control the speed but also selects the appropriate gear.
The system also uses EcoRoll technology, which selects
the transmission’s neutral setting and allows the coach to
freewheel for longer without any drag losses. The system The Euro 6 Mercedes-Benz OM

perceptible 20 mm. Once the speed goes back down below
70 kph, the body automatically rises again. The lowering re-
duces the frontal area and thus also fuel consumption and
emissions, Mercedes-Benz said.
Mercedes-Benz said the Tourismo RHD has a drag coef-
ficient (Cd) value of 0.33, and said this figure is unmatched
by any other touring coach.
The new vehicle range features a number of assistance
systems and active and passive safety tools, including the
emergency braking system Active Brake Assist 3, Stop/
Start Assist for use in stop-and-go traffic, and the drowsi-
ness detection system Attention Assist.
As for passive safety, if despite all safety measures an ac-
cident should happen, the coaches are equipped with the
Front Collision Guard (FCG) to protect driver and co-driver in
the event of a collision. The coach’s completely new annular
frame construction provides maximum survival space for both
passengers and driver should the vehicle overturn sideways.
Finally the standard equipment of all Mercedes-Benz
buses and coaches includes a fire alarm system with a de-
tection function that monitors the engine compartment.
Launched in 1994 as a single-deck bus with just one
length option, the Tourismo RHD range has reached to date
a production output of over 26 000 coaches. dpi

Caterpillar Produces Compactor In Brazil

Caterpillar has begun production of its CW34 pneumatic
compactor at its plant in Piracicaba, São Paulo state, Brazil.
The company said it decided to introduce the machine
because of optimistic market numbers. In 2001, Brazil had
170 000 km of paved roads. In 2015, it reached 210 000 km. JCB has introduced new hydraulic excavators, includ-
ing the JS220LC, to the Brazilian market.

Despite the recession, JCB said it believes the agricultural

market is solid and it expects to see more of its machines go-
ing into farm applications. According to the Brazilian Machin-
ery Builder’s Association (ABIMAQ), construction machinery
is popular in the agricultural sector. In 2016, the percentage of
hydraulic excavator sales in the agricultural sector was 14%.
