 What are the different types of literary criticism? Explain each.
 What is the historical approach to literary criticism?
 How did the New Critics view literature?
3.3. Abstraction:
 Literary criticism refers to a genre of writing whereby an
author critiques a literary text, either a work of fiction, a
play, or poetry. Alternatively, some works of literary
criticism address how a particular theory of interpretation
informs a reading of a work or refutes some other critics’
reading of a work.
3.4. Application:
Group activity
In a group of 3 members, search and list down at least 3 samples
of prose and poetry that are applicable for each literary criticism
discussed. Give a concrete explanation why such stories would fall
under that category.

Discuss with your partner the whole story. What is his/her
insight or understanding about the story? In your discussion
include this questions:
How would “the yellow wallpaper” be different if it were told
from John’s point of view?
What are some additional meanings behind the color of the
wallpaper?
Selected partners will present their discussion about the
story in the next meeting.
Philippine Literature is important in our life. As
 who truly love and take pride in our culture, we have to manifest
our deep concern for our own literature and this we can do by
studying the literature of our country. We study literature so that
we can better appreciate our literary heritage. Through a study
of literature we can trace the rich heritage of ideas handed down
to us from our forefathers and we can understand ourselves
better and take pride in being Filipino.
Filipinos who truly love and take pride in our culture, we

country. We study literature so that we can better
