Level II = Books 7 - 12
Level III = Books 13 - 18
Level IV = Books 19 - 24
Level V = Books 25 - 30
Level VI = Books 31 - 34

The coordinated instructional package for Books 1-30 consist of the

following:

1. Instructor Text
2. Student Text
3. Language Laboratory Activities Instructor Text
4. Language Laboratory Activities Student Text
5. Audio Recordings
6. Quiz Kits
7. Optional and supplemental training materials

This Homework and Evaluation Exercises Booklet is designed for use by

students who will not retain their student texts. It consists of
homework and evaluation exercises identical to those found in its
U U

corresponding book. The pages in this booklet are perforated so that

students may remove them as necessary.

NOTES TO THE STUDENT

This booklet contains the homework and evaluation exercises for Book
30, Level V. These exercises are exactly the same as those found at
the end of Book 30 Student Text. You may write the answers to the
exercises in this booklet.

The homework and the evaluation exercises are designed to help you
accomplish the objectives of each lesson. The homework exercises for
each lesson will require about two hours to complete. They should be
completed individually and will usually be checked in class before
starting the next lesson. The evaluation exercises are short quizzes
that will be given after each lesson is completed. The evaluation
exercises should be completed in class unless otherwise instructed.

G. Read the following paragraphs and then answer the questions that
follow in complete sentences.

THE HYDROFOIL

"A boat that flies through the water on wings"--that is an

accurate description of the hydrofoil, or hydrofoil boat. This
graceful boat has been considered the most important development in
ocean engineering since steam was first used to propel ships. Its
wings are known as foils, or hydrofoils ("water wings"), because of
their similarity to the airfoils ("air wings") of an airplane. The
wings of a hydrofoil are attached to metal supports which extend
downward from the hull. There are two sets of foils. One set is
located toward the front of the boat, and the other set is near the
stern.

HW-21
When traveling at slow or moderate speeds, a hydrofoil operates
like an ordinary boat, with its hull partly submerged in the water.
As the boat picks up speed, water is deflected from the upper surfaces
of the foils, just as air is deflected from the upper surface of an
airplane wing. The water pressure on the top foil surfaces decreases
and this reduced pressure creates lift. As more and more lift is
produced, the bow comes up from the water. Little by little, the
entire hull rises clear of the surface and the boat is ready to fly.
In some types of hydrofoils the foils remain submerged at all times.
In other types, they are only partly submerged when the boat is
"flying." When speed is reduced, the pressure on the upper wings
increases and the lift is diminished. When this happens, the
hydrofoil is ready to come down to the surface of the water again.

The idea of the hydrofoil goes back to 1887 when a French

noblemen, the Count de Lambert, demonstrated a boat with winglike
structures on the Seine River. Although the newspapers reported the
event, very little was heard about the boat thereafter.

The first successful hydrofoil boat was built in l905 by the

Italian Enrico Forlanini. It reached a speed of 75 kilometers an
hour. In l9l9, the U.S. inventor Alexander Graham Bell constructed a
hydrofoil boat that was supposed to have raced at 130 kilometers an
hour.

The modern development of the hydrofoil began in Germany in the

l930s. By l945, nine different types of hydrofoils had been built and
tested.

Today, one of the main uses of hydrofoils is their utilization in

carrying passengers on many of the world's waterways. Even though
many are in active use, it is felt that the hydrofoil is a boat of the
future because engineers are still trying to solve problems that have
restricted its full development.

We go to London first and watch the guards at Buckingham Palace. Then
we take a ferry boat across the English Channel. We usually stop in
France. While there, we see some shows and visit some art museums.
Then we go on to Madrid. Some of our favorite restaurants are there,
and we stop in at each of them. Then we continue on to either
Switzerland or Italy. When in Switzerland, we go snow skiing. In
Italy, we shop for fine Italian leather and beautiful gold jewelry.
Sometimes we cruise off the coast of Greece before returning home. We

LELAND STANFORD JUNIOR UNIVERSITY

Leland Stanford Junior University, generally known as Stanford

University, is located in Palo Alto, California thirty five miles
southeast of San Francisco. It's a private, highly competitive,
coeducational institution of higher learning founded in 1885 by Leland
A. Stanford and his wife, Jane. The campus was established in memory
of their son, Leland Stanford, Jr. who had died at the age of fifteen.

HW-44
The Stanfords' original contribution for the funding of the
university consisted of $22,000,000 and nine thousand acres of their
Palo Alto farm. They specifically set aside five thousand acres for
the construction of the educational campus. Today, all the
educational buildings, dormitories, and the university library, which
contains more than three million volumes including special collections
on transportation, music, and modern English and American literature,
are located on the main campus. Other important buildings on the main
campus are: the Memorial Church, famous for its beautiful
architecture, the Hoover Tower which houses the Hoover Institution of
War, Revolution and Peace, and the Stanford Medical Center. The
remaining four thousand acres are leased for industrial, commercial,
residential and professional use. An additional three hundred acres
which were donated later are utilized for the cultivation of plants
and trees for scientific and educational purposes.

The university offers bachelor's, master's, doctor's and

professional degrees in the humanities and sciences, engineering,
medicine, earth sciences, law, business, and education.

The total enrollment of undergraduate and graduate students,

composed of diverse ethnic backgrounds, averages between thirteen and
fourteen thousand. Out of the fifteen thousand yearly applicants to
the university, about two thousand five hundred are accepted, and
approximately one thousand five hundred end up enrolling.

Ninety eight percent of the entering freshmen rank in the top ten
percent of their high school class. The majority of these highly
motivated students will remain at the university until graduation. It
seems that in selecting the entering freshmen, the university is also
selecting the graduating individuals.

Private universities do have high tuitions, but Stanford has

several financial programs that make it possible for outstanding
students from moderate family incomes to attend the university. There
are also athletic scholarships available for outstanding athletes with
a strong academic background.

HW-46
K. Read the following paragraphs, and then write the answers to
the questions in complete sentences.

HOT-AIR BALLOONS

Since the late l950's an interest in hot-air ballooning as a

sport has increased mainly because the output of labor necessary to
inflate balloons has decreased, and because propane has been found to
be more efficient and economical.

The hot-air balloon actually consists of a pair shaped balloon

made from approximately 1,300 square yards of synthetic fabric from
which an enclosure resembling a basket for a crew of one or two is
suspended. Two twenty-gallon propane tanks are attached to the basket
and a burner is situated on a platform above the pilot's head. The
dimensions are sixty-five feet tall by fifty-five feet across.

Up and down control of the balloon's flight path is accomplished

by valves that regulate the amount of propane flowing from the tanks
to the burner, but the main lift is caused by the temperature
difference between the air inside the balloon and the air outside.
Once the balloon is airborne, it has no directional control capability
and must drift with the wind. Pilots, therefore, try to maintain a
flight altitude at which winds will carry them in a planned direction.

Although there are many hot-air balloon enthusiasts throughout

the United States, Arizona, because of its moderate temperatures, wide
open spaces and calm winds, attracts many hot-air balloon crews and
spectators from November through April.

Spectators are fascinated with the variety of balloon shapes that

have been designed recently. In addition to the traditional pair
shaped balloons, there are animal and cartoon character designs. The
colors are so varied and bright that when the balloons are ready to
lift off, the ground appears to be covered with blossoming flowers.
Then there is joy and excitement as the beautiful colors rise into the
sky.

1. Why has there been an increased interest in hot-air ballooning

since the late l950's?
