2. Student Text
3. Audio Recordings
4. Language Laboratory Activities Instructor Text
5. Language Laboratory Activities Student Text
6. Quiz Kits
7. Optional training aids

This Homework and Evaluation Exercises Booklet is designed for use by

students who will not retain their student texts. It consists of
homework and evaluation exercises identical to those found in its

J. Read the following text and take notes in the form of key
words or phrases

AIRSHIPS FOR THE FUTURE

The U.S. Navy has plans to return airships to active duty.

After twenty-five years in retirement, airships are now favored to
be used as an early warning system against the threat of low-flying
missiles.

The new airships will be lighter, faster, more maneuverable,

and more technologically advanced than the ones of World War II.
They will be equipped with radar and communications equipment, and
will utilize a special radar antenna. This antenna will enable the
airship to detect low-flying missiles at extended ranges.

Once a missile is detected, the airship will relay a warning

to other ships and aircraft. This early detection may increase the
warning time from thirty seconds to five minutes, which will allow
time for the ships to launch defensive missiles.

The new airship will be able to operate at an altitude of up to

10,000 feet and will have a top speed of eighty-five miles per hour.
Unlike fixed-wing aircraft, the airship will be very fuel efficient;
it will be able to stay in the air for several days at a time.

try to determine the meaning from the rest of the sentence or

TESTING PARACHUTES

People who test parachutes

spend their days packing their
parachutes, jumping, recovering
equipment, and then repacking.

Test parachutists perform

a necessary service for
parachute design engineers.
From their test jumps, the
parachutists provide necessary
information to engineers on
the performance of new and
modified parachutes.
Instruments worn and operated
by the test parachutists during
their jumps measure performance
variables, such as stability,
descent rate, and opening
shock.

Another responsibility of the test parachutist is to review

packing instructions and procedures for parachutes, ensuring that the
instructions are clear and accurate before they are distributed.

Before earning the title of "test parachutist", a person is

required to perform eighteen different kinds of jumps, such as jumping
from very high altitudes or landing in water.

Jumping out of airplanes is not for everyone, but it's just a

typical day for those who test parachutes.

G. Read the paragraph below. Then select the correct answer to

each question.

Radar is a short way of saying "radio detection and ranging".

Radar is a way of locating an object such as an airplane by using
radio waves. A transmitter emits radio waves. An antenna helps to
send out these radio waves. The waves travel close to 186,000 miles
per second, and they always travel in a straight line. When the
waves hit a solid object, they bounce back. The same antenna helps
to receive the radio waves as they bounce off the object. The waves
return to the receiver part of the radar unit. The receiver picks up
the returning waves. The returning waves cause the indicator to send
a signal to a screen, much like a TV screen. The returning waves are
seen as a bright spot on the screen. Lines on the screen indicate the
distance and direction of the object.

1. What do the letters in "radar" represent?

a. range and navigation finder

b. radio detection and ranging
c. real sound waves and range
d. range determination and frequency

2. What does a radar device do?

a. It tells the location and distance of objects.

b. It repairs vehicles at a distance
c. It removes the vehicle from its location.
d. It transmits a vehicle or object to another location.

3. What device emits the radio waves?

a. a TV set
b. a receiver
c. a screen
d. a transmitter

HW-18
4. What are used in radar?

a. ocean waves
b. radio waves
c. light waves
d. air waves

5. How fast do the radio waves travel?

a. 186,000 miles per minute

b. 186,000 miles per second
c. 106,800 miles per second
d. 816,000 miles per minute

6. What recognizes radio waves as they bounce off an object

and return back?

a. a transmitter
b. a screen
c. an antenna
d. an object

7. How do radio waves travel?

a. in a straight line
b. through water
c. around corners
d. close to the ground

8. Which statement best summarizes how radar works?

a. Radio waves are sent to an object, are absorbed by the

object, and do not send any signals back to the
receiver.
b. TV waves are transmitted and received by an antenna.
c. Radio waves are transmitted, bounce off an object, are
received, and are seen as bright spots on a screen.
d. Sound waves are transmitted and received by a TV camera
and shown as light spots on the screen.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

HW-19
H. Read the following text and then answer the questions at the
end. It you don't recognize a word or a grammar structure,
try to determine the meaning from the rest of the sentence or
paragraph. Don't use your dictionary.

Bats are flying animals, but they are not birds. The really
extraordinary thing about bats is that they are almost blind. They
have extremely poor vision, yet they have no trouble flying even on
dark nights when they hunt for food. They are also very efficient
in catching the insects they eat.

How do they do all this so well in spite of their poor vision?

The answer is "sonar." They fly by sonar! They send out sound
Waves that bounce off objects in their path. These waves tell the
bat where the object is located. When the sound waves hit an object,
they produce another sound called an "echo." Of course, these sound
signals and echoes cannot be heard by people, but the bat's ear can
hear them. A bat can hear sounds at 100,000 vibrations per second.
A bat's sonar system is very precise. Bats have been placed in a
crowded room and could fly about the room without hitting anything.

1. What are bats?

2. Do bats have good vision?

3. When do bats do most of their flying?

HW-20
4. What do bats eat?

5. How do bats prevent hitting objects while they're flying?

developed more complex engines. Furthermore, it became a war

vessel that carried torpedoes in addition to rescue devices and

communications equipment. Moreover, modern submarines have

become powered by nuclear energy, which allows them to stay

underwater a longer time.

TRASH ON THE BEACH

Michael and John are studying biology at the university. Last

weekend they went to the coast with their professor and other
students to pick up trash on the beach.

The students worked in teams of three. Two people picked up

trash and put it into huge plastic garbage bags, while the third
person took notes, recording everything which was picked up.

When the students returned to the classroom the next week, they
compared notes. Michael and John reported that their team found
several different categories of trash. These were their notes.

HW-32
NOTES

Plastic items:

12 plastic bags
79 food containers
17 plastic utensils (knives, forks, spoons)
10 soda bottles
14 gallon-size milk containers
8 cigarette lighters
3 children's beach toys
23 plastic cups
17 egg cartons

Glass items:

18 soda bottles
16 beer bottles
21 jars
13 light bulbs

Metal items:

20 soda cans
6 aerosol cans
11 food cans

They also found a lot of paper, wood, and other parts of objects.
They also noticed a lot of dead fish and birds on the beach.

Michael and John were surprised and upset that all this trash was
from a section of beach only 200 yards long! They tried to multiply
that by the miles of coastline of their state and realized that the
beaches were covered with tons of trash.

The students concluded from their data that trash and waste
disposal is a serious problem. They wrote a report about the
environment being threatened by man-made waste, noting that plastic
items occurred the most frequently. They decided that they hadn't
found much metal because metal can be melted down and recycled.

The professor asked the class what the future would be like. All
agreed that trash was ugly and decided to act responsibly by doing
their share to keep their beaches clean.

addition, nuclear power plants create another problem: what to do
with the radioactive waste which is produced in these plants.
Scientists haven't yet found a completely safe means of nuclear waste
disposal. Biologists say the temporary solutions now used for keeping

waste containers which have been put underground are now leaking and
