Annotation.
The headline of the article I have read suggests that physicists are now exploiting
muons to peer inside canisters of radioactive waste. It is scientific article taken from the
December 2019 issue of Physics World.
The article is devoted to muons. The article touches upon the issue of using muons,
scientists discover new inventions. These inventions help scientists better know the world
hidden from human eyes.
The author starts by telling what muons are and why science needs them. Muons are
fundamental charged particles created when cosmic rays collide with nuclei in the
atmosphere to yield pions that then decay. This partial having about 200 times the mass
of electrons. Much attention is given to muography. Еhis technology is used for
visualization, for example, to look inside the drums of radioactive waste. According to
the article muography is used not only by scientists but by geologists and archaeologists.
Further the author reports which experiments were carried out using muography which
are planned in the future.
I found the article interesting and useful because for me muons were a revelation.
Previously, I did not know about such a particle and how useful it is. The article opened
the curtain for me in the world of science.
