This is accomplished by allowing precisely measured exhaust gases to bypass the turbine wheel during certain modes of engine operation. During low-rpm operation, the turbocharger operates as a closed-system turbocharger, and all of the exhaust gases flow through the turbine side of the turbocharger where the gases’ heat energy Is transferred to the compressor wheel and used to compress intake air. During highpm operation, however, the turbocharger becomes an open-system turbocharger and allows exhaust gas to bypass the turbine, Since exhaust gasis gated around the turbine wheel, less energy is absorbed through the turbine and transferred to the compressor, allowing for precisely controlled intake manifold pressures and turbine speeds, Fig, 6, Wastegate Turbocharger Assembly Wastegate Actuator The wastegate actuator is mounted on the turbocharger and consists of a pressure canister, diaphragm, and rod. As pressure increases in the canister, as dictated by the intake manifold pressure, the actuator rod opens the wastegate valve, Wastegate Valve e valve is mounted inside the turbocharger in the turbine housing. As the valve opens, exhaust fed to bypass the turbine wheal, lowering turbine spead to optimize intake manifold pressure. Hot Shutdown Monitor Basic Description The hot shutdown monitor logs an inactive fault ifthe engine is turned off by the operator while still “nat” orby the engine protection shutdown feature. The engine Is considered hot ifthe hot shutdawn load percent of the engine is above the hhot shutdown monitor minimum load set by an electronic service tool. The hat shutdown load percent is based on the duty cycle load factor, which is determined from engine fueling levels. o0T0-9 Page 9 Low-idle Shutdown asic Description Low-idle shutdown helps increase fual efficiency and engine life by shutting down an idling engine when there is an absence of an operator input for a programmable time period. The programmable time period can be adjusted with INSITE” within calibrated minimum and maximum limits Sensed Parameters Basic Description ‘This feature allows an OEM provided pressure sensor and/or an OEM provided temperature sensor to be read by the ‘electronic control module (ECM). It also determines the out-of-range limits for each sensor. Ifthe sensor value is outside the limits, then a fault will be logged corresponding to the out-of-range sensor and a default value will be used for the out-of-range sensor. The inputs from the OEML-provided temperature and pressure sensors can be used as inputs for other features. Switched Outputs Basie Description This feature provides up to two fully independent switched outputs for OEM use. The state of each switched output Is determined by up to 12 inputs to the electronic contral module (ECM). The ECM can provide different outputs if any of the inputs are above or below calibratable thresholds, Each switched output is independent of the other with respect to control parameter input and threshold settings. Throttle-Activated Diagnostic Switch Basic Description ‘The throttle-activated diagnostic switch is intended to eliminate the need for a dash-mounted diagnostic switch, which is used to activate the diagnostic mode to display active fault codes in a sequence of flashing lamps. The throttle- xctivated diagnostic switch eliminates the need for a dash-mounted diagnostic switch by providing a simple sequence €f throttle mavements to activate the diagnostic mode, ‘The throttle-activated diagnostic switch will automatically activate the diagnostic mode when the engine is not run: hing, the keyswitch is in the ON position, and any throttle related errors are detected. This allows the operator to activate the diagnostic mode when throttle errors prevent them from doing so with throttle movements, Fig. 8, Thrattle-Activated Diagnostic Switch Fault Mode ooTo-g Page 10 Duty Cycle Monitor Basic Description ‘The duty cycle monitor tracks the time the engine spends in 50 different operating regions. These operating regions are based on engine speed and engine torque.
