The Union of Cruelty

The Help is a novel that highlights the racial discrimination African-American people

suffered during the early 1960s and their life experiences as maids who are affected by social

injustice. This novel, written by Kathryn Stockett, conveys the idea that in order to ameliorate

social life, everyone must have courage to express their individual confidence regardless of their

skin colour, culture, and their social situation. I decided to read this genre of novel because I

wanted to connect with the suffering that some people experienced in their life because of

racism. Also this book was recommended to me by one of my friends who has many common

characteristics as me. At first, I didn’t think this novel would attract me but I had been awake

most of the nights to read it. This book provides insight to different social injustices such as civil

rights and racism in the society.

In addition, the author uses three people to narrate the book which makes the story more

interesting and captivating. By using this type of narration, the author uses flashbacks but in this

time the events are described by another person with different points of view. I think this type of

novel is more interesting for the readers because it describes every event with more detail and

also gives us the feeling each of them experiences in that situation so the readers can imagine all

the events and communicate with the novel easier.

I think this book was the best choice to read because most of the novels that I read before

were about the life experience of ordinary people and none of them were about social injustices

that exist in the society .This book was interesting to me because I was be able to imagine every

events that happened thorough the novel. Also in some cases, it was hard to understand, because
the author uses dialogic language. Instead of this, this book is one of the best novels in the world

and I enjoyed it.

In the end, I think my personal response is my best work. I thought I have no common thing with

the novel, but after spending a day to think about common things I remember the first days in

Canada and how much I hated to live here because of my religion.
